Default Wheel spacer question

Changing my tires I noticed on the OEM spacers there is a mark on them kinda like a little "nick" marking them . What are they for and does the "nick" go to the wheel or out toward the frame ? All the spacers have them on all 4

Usually they only have them on one side
to determine left and right. Not sure why all
Of them have it. And yup all work on bike done
myself exluding paint job.
