Default Oil Temperature

I am new to Harley riding, and bought a 2011 Fat Boy Lo. I have installed a screaming eagle air breather and V&H big radius 2-2 pipes. The dealership put in their recommended EFI map.

When riding around the city, my legs get extremely hot from the engine, to the point where it is quite uncomfortable. I put in an oil tank temperature gauge, and when riding in low humidity, at 22 Deg C (72 Deg F), the oil temperature gets to about 120 Deg C (248 to 250 Deg F).

I hit a fair amount of red lights, but normal city driving with light traffic.

Can anyone advise if this is a normal oil temperature, or is my bike running hot? If it is running hot, does anyone have any idea of what might be the cause?

I have about 2000 KM on the bike, and switched to AMSOIL 20W-50 synthetic after the break in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did the dealer install a Power Commander or some other fuel management or did they just flash your module? I don't know about the oil temp limits.

I have a 2011 Heritage. I just finished with se highflow ac, and cycle shack exhaust, I also got the screaming eagle super tuner pro and dyno tune. My oil temp runs the same as yours. About 250 I have seen it get up to 260 when climbing a pass here in Colorado. The outside temp doesn't seem to matter it just runs there. I have heard that a good tune will make it run cooler, but I have had mine tuned at the dealer and at another dyno shop. Same thing runs hot. I have talked with a few dealers outside of my area and have heard that they just run that way. I myself am going to put in a oil cooler ( Jagg most likely ). If you find a different way to cool it down I would love to know, But I have been unsuccessful at this point.

I have a 2010 heritage and had the same exp as you all. The first weekend I got stuck in traffic and could barley stand sitting on the bike. I installed a hd oil cooler and the temp is around 220. It's still hot but more tolerable.

Its normal for city riding.

If U ever put in a F/M and get her dynoed she'll drop to 230-235.

Then if U do some cams she cool down another 15-20. ours is normally 210-220, but can still warm up fast if Ur stuck very long, most I've seen since doing the cams was 240, waiting 4-5 minutes for a train, in 95 heat.

Most oil coolers needs the bike be moving to cool down, stuck in city traffic, they won't help much unless U get one that has a fan on it.

Those BR's are even making the heat worse the way their are routed down U bike.

Normal. I run 240ish too no matter if I am hitting traffic or running 80 down the freeway.

I got me the crotch cooler from Capt Itch and the thing works like a damn dream! Absolutely love it. It works as designed and no more heat on my inner legs while riding or sitting still.......

Get the Itch to hook you up!!!!

Yeah from what I'm hearing 250-280 is a standard oil temperature. I can't swear by it because I don't have an oil temp guage on mine, but removing the cat will take the heat that's generated in that area of the exhaust and move it out of there quicker. The cat traps the exhaust making the entire header to just past the tranny a pressure cooker area. I've removed mine and it's made a huge differance but I couldn't tell you by how much. I'd get me a gauge but I don't want to get hung up on looking at the dang thing all the time...I get obsessive about things like that so I just avoid it, instead I gather data from threads and build a consensus.

I just got home and hit the forum. Rode 45 minutes at 90 degrees air temp. Oil temp was 200 (using same gauge, oil temp dipstick). I have seen mine get to 240 at Sturgis in Sturgis traffic. I don't have an oil cooler. 2009 Fatboy Arlen Ness big sucker intake, Rush Crossover exhaust, TTS Mastertune.

Unfortunately I don't have a Power Commander or tuner of any kind. The dealer just flashed the module.

TUCCI, I hate to sound stupid, but when you advise to remove the cat, can you elaborate what you are referring too?
