I have seen some nice looking ones on e-bay in differant shapes and styles. I have no personal experiance with them so I cant comment on quality, but they do look much better than the stock ones.
I removed the passenger pillon and backrest from my Heritage, since I ride solo. The large nuts and metal plate bothered me. I removed the brachet with protruding studs from the fender, opened up the holes and fitted two regular seat nuts into the opening. If you remove the seat and pull out the electronic unit mounted in the fender, you have full access to the holes.

I cut down some 1/4 x 20 bolts and epoxied them into the old seat nuts, if I ever want to put the passenger pillon back on.
