Default Help with rear wiring harness

I posted this in the electrical thread too but figured there would be more views here.

Ok just installed new fender and eliminated the rear taillight. I want to run turn signals that are 3 function run/turn/stop My bike had aftermarket rear LED turn signals installed before I got it and they only worked for turn. My brother says the factory trun signals work all three if you just install a dual filament bulb and use red cover. Is this true? Also i intend to use the wiring harness off the old fender so that it plugs right in under the seat. What color wires would go to what? I have a 2008 nighttrain and there are six wires in the harness blue, red w/yellow, orange w/white, brown, black, and violet. I also need to know what wire or color do I use to run down to the new side mount license plate for light? I am really good with most tools but wiring scares the hell out of me I dont want to short out anything.

Colors for main rear harness:
Orange/White : Tail light Non Domestic Harley models
Blue : Tail light Domestic bikes
Red/Yellow : Brake light
Brown : Right indicator
Violet : Left indicator
(might be the other way around for the indicators)
Black : Ground

As for putting in a dual filament bulb, don't think so, you will need to install new socket. The actual indicators at the back are only wired with 2 wires, one of which is ground.

Custom Dynamics sells LEDs for the back that turn the indicators in run/stop/indicator works great, I have them on my bike, easy to install too.

(you will need a ballast for them to work properly)

The light for your license plate, can be split from the Blue wire.

I would think that if you bought a module such as the Kuryakyn then you could just plug it in line and use all of your existing wiring and single filament lights.

I did as suggested above (I used the HD run/run/stop module). Worked great. I took the harness apart and ran wires external to the frame (not enough clearance under the fender).

HD run/brake/turn module up under the seat, and slapped a set of red lenses on the rear. Never cared for the amber on the rear.

Wanted to add the biggest thing for me was tracking down a lower wattage bulbs, stock bulbs are just too bright. Looks like brake lights on all the time. Dont remember the replacement bulb # off hand but it did tone it down.

Ok here is I guess where my lack of understanding comes in. I have completely changed the rear end and am no longer going to run a large brake/tail and want to use my turn signals as all 3 run/stop/turn I see bikes all the time where people have done this. I dont have the factory turn signals they were replaced with small LED bullets and were only wired for turn. I guess I need an idiots guide to how to take the wiring harness and hook up the lights. I need to run two run/turn/stop lights and one constant for the light on the side mount plate. I will not be using the rear circuit board that was inside the taillight so the connections will need to be spliced and I didnt think the module that plugs in at the seat would do anything if I dont have the correct wires hooked up to the lights. I was hoping someone would have had a previous thread on how to do this but could not find it.

I did the same thing, but without changing to lower wattage bulbs. Mine aren't quite as bright as the tail light. When I hit the breaks they get brighter (like they should) but still aren't as bright as the brake light filament in the tail light bulb.

For single filament bulbs to function as running lights AND brake lights, they have to get reduced voltage in running light mode and full voltage in brake light mode. It's hard to imagine them being too bright while getting reduced voltage in running light mode. Have you checked to make sure they get brighter when you hit the brakes?

Oh yeah, the bike was new when I changed it out. Most folks I run across same thing. Next time I pull the bulbs I'll write the number down. Surprised no one else in here run across it, several other folks diff forum knew what I was talking about.

You will still need to add a run/turn/brake module that plugs into the harness under the seat. You don't have to wire the lights any differently. The turn signals still get hooked up the same (brown wire to the right turn signal and violet wire to the left). As stated below, the turn signal wires might be the other way around, I don't remember for sure. Just test before making final connections.

Run the blue wire (orange/white if it's not domestic) to the side plate running light. If your side light has a separate brake light, use the red/yellow wire (red with yellow stripe) to the brake light. If your side light does not have a brake light circuit, then you won't connect the red/yellow wire to anything. The turn signals will act as brake lights if you install a run/turn/brake module.

The only other issue would be the equalizer for the LED lights (if you have one). If you have an equalizer, it needs to plug in front of the run/turn/brake module.
