Default Advice on starter

I think my starter is giving out. Bike runs great but sometimes have to punch the starter a couple times before it actually turns the engine over. I replaced the battery last year and well, I've had bad starters before on other bikes, so I know the symptoms.

Anyway, I've heard this is a common problem on 07 HD? Oil leaking into the starter? I think I read that somewhere..

Should I go with a stock replacement or aftermarket? I'm not just looking at the cheapest option. If some of these starters have a design flaw causing them to die early, I don't need another stocker.

Thanks in advance

I had the same problem on my 07. It was the starter clutch.

figstr - So you didn't change the whole starter? How much did that cost?

Sorry I have not heard this is a common problem on the 07's

IMHO It'd save U money to take her in and let a good wrench see what's wrong instead of throwing money at her not knowing what it is.

Could be as simple as Ur switch. or wiring issue.

no need to change the whole starter. there's only like 3 parts that can go wrong with it. the armature, solenoid, and most likely the starter clutch. if you decide to change the clutch, buy an aftermarket one with a lifetime warranty cause the stock ones are junk. toyota uses them in some of their cars, except they sell them for alot cheaper than harley. all ***** sells a good starter clutch and so does zen. and if you're going to change it out, go ahead and get a solenoid kit as well. just cause they're so cheap.

I got the starter clutch at Harley and don't really remember how much it was. The install wasn't cheap as I had my Indy do it. If I remember correctly the total was about $150 - $200 with labor. The starter clutch wasn't that expensive.
