Well I've had a few misfires when I hit the starter button. Battery tested good and all the connections were tight. So I pulled the starter out and found several teeth in poor shape. I have a 07 SG with a 103" Stage II set up. I'm looking for options on a solid starter. Has anyone upgraded their starter. I see the HD starters ( P/N 66477-10) are about 430.00 Is there an aftermarket upgrade that will perform better for around the same price?
Thanks
Mark

Change the Bendix on it and use it till it stops. They are made of a softer metal than the flywheel. Change it out and see how long it lasts. I wouldn't just trash a starter because the Bendix is worn. I am sure you can find an aftermarket part that will perform better and it will be much cheaper than a whole new starter.
yup- when the 'extreme starter' craze started in the 90's, I kept quietly servicing my starters on my bikes--- they are all working well ( except for the starter on the '53).
some of the aftermarket starters are gone from the market and maybe weren't so good after all.
The starter on my 88 FXRP I have rebuilt each part many times. The only fatal fault is if the windings burn up.
replace the bendix and proceed.
btw there was starter on the classifieds board a couple of days ago cheep.

Absolutely agree with the above. The "Super Starters" of the 90's were nothing more than stators with more windings. The stuff that broke inside though, ( reduction gearing, teeth, etc,) were the same components as stock.
Your starter is not at fault for what's tearing it up. Just keep fixing it.
you will be replacing again if you do not root cause this......my take is you need to add compression release...others will say replacing your compensator will do the trick.
Your big inch motor was probably tight when new and took time to lossen up. Takes a toll on the starter drive. Replace drive and will probably be good now the motor has broken in and loosened up.
