Could be an engine or exhaust pipe mount... a little rust that is squeaking at certain RPM's.

The new PCV vents work fine.

Is there a tunnel near you? Ride around in one and see if that helps you hear it at other RPM's or if that changes your perception of where it is coming from.

Good luck. Ride it until it breaks... seems to be the only way to enjoy riding a Harley.

I just started noticing a similar noise on my 05' FXST. The only thing I changed were the spark plugs. I plan on changing the header pipe and interconnect tube gaskets here in the next couple of weeks cause I know that they have worn out. I'll see what happens then.

There is a crossover/interconnect tube that connects the two exhaust pipes to balance exhaust pressure on the Softail models. Most Softails with same side exhaust have this tube. They use a small 1" crush gasket.

My guess is that it's the head gasket. I've heard that sound before....distinct chirp under various loads

You mean my head gasket might be leaking?! Is there a way to check and be sure?

Default A little more . . .

I did a little more research. I'm still leaning toward exhaust leak and will recheck all mounts and connections. I also read to check the upper motor mount. I'm going to do this today and recheck.

This seemed like a common problem . . . ..

Default Not . . . .

I checked all motor mounts and took the exhaust heat shields off to eliminate those possible causes. It's definitely a new noise since I replaced the cam chain tensioners. I read on here to use a paper towel tube to try and isolate the noise. I thought this was hokey but tried it anyway. It worked to help me isolate the noise. It is coming from the rocker box. I could hear it and isolate it even in neutral.

The only thing I know to try now is to take the tank off and check those rocker boxes. I KNOW I triple checked everything when I put the top end back together and used a torque wrench to the manual's specs. I thought it was only from the front jug but the paper towel holder help me even hear it in the rear jug. In my test drives, it's still mainly noticeable at certain RPMs.

Chirp could be a completely unassociated drive belt noise if it only happens when it's moving.
