1999 was the only year for the Evo NT, came stock with a CV carb. Most likely has around a 175 main jet. Depending on pipes, intake, you are running too big a main jet if rich and poor mileage. Pull it, take the bottom off and look at the jet in the middle. It will have very tiny numbers. I'm guessing it's a 190 or larger. Go down a size or two (180-185). Put in some new plugs and go run it on the freeway/backroad, open her up a few times go home pull the plugs and see if black (rich) or light tan (good). If white you went too far (lean). Could be you're not getting enough air also.

Post your setup (pipes, AC) and we can help you better. If you don't know post some pics.

There are better explanations of this procedure out there. This goes over the basics:

Harley Dude - thanks a ton. Great info for me (bike veteran, Harley newbie).

Long story on the scoot, but it has an unknown aftermarket 2-1 It is fairly mellow tone so I assume some baffling. K&N filter and as near as I can tell an after market backing plate.

No idea what else is going on inside the motor. I have been taking care of lots and lots of bone-head "work" (handling was a bit squirrely, found no bearing adjust nut under top triple tree - only thing holding the front end together was the the fork stem nut on top of the triple tree...).

Anyway, thanks for the great information. I am planning on removing both tanks tomorrow (new mount bushings going on) so I will either pop the carb off or at least get the float bowl off and see what jets are installed.

Lots of way smarter carb guys than myself hang in the evo section. If stumped go ask questions there. Good luck!

Okay, maybe trouble in river city.... popped the float bowl off - jets are pretty crungy - main is a 185 / pilot is a 42. 42 is pretty thin already but I have my idle mixture screw turned all of the way in!!!

I just ordered James rebuild kit,185, 180, 175 mains, 40, 42 pilots. Perhaps one of the previous owners got micro-drill happy and hacked one or both of the jets out...

Past the basic rebuild and mucking with jets, any other suspect parts in the carb to look at?

Thanks.

ps - plugs are stock harley 5R6A - any recommendations to try a hotter plug?

Pull the idle mixture screw all the way out. There is a rubber o-ring or should be an o-ring on needle itself. If that is missing or torn that may be causing your problem. I have heard of it happening. Also pull the slide out of the top and inspect the rubber on the vacuum slide. The slide should not cause any idle problems but it is something you want to check. When you put the slide back in make sure that the rubber lines up in the slots of the carb body and CAREFULLY put the top cover back on. Also pull the main jet and emulsion tube out and pull the needle jet out and clean all that area up.

One last thing as far as the int. jet goes I would start with a .45 at least. They come with a .42 from the factory but this is always to lean. But first I would figure out why you are getting such a rich condition with that .42 and the idle mixture all the way in.

If you need a schematic this site may help you out as far as understanding where everything is at.

Hey 2006, thanks for the info - no o-ring (assume it would be between the spring and the threaded part of the needle? And I have never seen a needle come to such a narrow end body?
