Default Riding someone else's Crossbones 700+ miles - springer maintenance first?

A buddy of mine is coming in this weekend to purchase a 2009 Crossbones. He is a Marine pilot stationed on the coast in North Carolina and has asked me to ride the bike to NC since he doesn't have time to make the trip. Ride someone else's bike through some of the most beautiful countryside in America? Sure!

Supposedly the bike has been well maintained with all service records available. I'm new to the springer front end and am curious if there is anything I need to check before I leave out. I'm going to do a basic service on the bike after we get it to my place but just wanted some details on anything to look for on the front end.

Thanks...

Should be no issues on a three year old springer, unless it has 50,000 miles.

Thanks for the replies. I was specifically wondering about the more frequent service intervals that I've read about on the springers. I thought I had remembered reading that it needing to be checked every 1500 miles or something like that.

It isn't that more frequent..... certainly not every 1500 miles..

Take a grease gun and grease the neck bearings. There is a Zerk fitting on the right side of the neck...

Every 2500 miles the rocker arms on the bottom of the suspension are supposed to be serviced. I usually go 5000 as they have not gotten out of tolerance since I've owned the bike. Other than that, normal head adjustments, and the aforementioned greasing of the neck. Cheers

I would probably delay a trip to the NC coast this weekend. Unless you enjoy riding through tropical storm force winds, rain, and flooding.
