Please Help ... Running
So I have a 1972 XLCH 1100 Sportster, and I just put new point and condenser into it, and it has a new Carb. But when it runs it wont throttle up very well, its like it wants to cut out and die...and if it makes it very long it backfires VERY VERYloudly and lots...
What could the problem/s be and does anyone have suggestions as to what I should do/check?
Thanks
PS: Does anyone know where online I can also find a Free or Low cost but VERY easy to follow wiring diagram for this bike? Thanks...

Was it running before? I would check the point again, make sure the gap is right. Also check the idle mixture screw, it could be set all the way in.
What else can you do really?

Yes, it was running before and Ihave checked the gap on the point repeatedly...it looks good to me but I dont know about the idle mixture screw..will check it out in the morning.
It just doesnt make sense to me yet I guess...just seems like something isnt right...will need to just keep on adjusting and playing with it.
Thanks

Well, if you set the point wrong, you could have tons of problem. Backfiring, lack of power, can't rev up the engine, etc. I am just guessing the point on a Harley is similar to car, did your set the point clearance when the point is on the highest lope? Just a thought, I am too young to see Harley with point and condenser, same age as your 1972 XLCH 1100 lol.
If it was running before you changed the carb, try putting the old carb back on and see if it runs any better. That should help isolate whether the problem is the points or carb.
By the way, my first Harley was a 1972 XLCH. I was out riding my BSA and it started to rain so I stopped at a Harley dealer just to get out of the rain. 20 minutes later I was the proud owner of a brand new '72 XLCH.
