Is there enough room to get to the snap rings? The energy one tool I've been looking at looks to have openings to allow access. Since this is solid, are there any problems?

 

As thick as that pipe is you could cut notches in the sides to give you more room without any serious flexing problems.

 

I have now made one and used it. He says a little less than an inch.
3/4 of an inch or less is better for the PCV pipe. $1.43 at Lowes.
Metal should be 1/4 inch and don't drill the hole too big or it will bend.
Make sure the "nut" grabs lots of thread.

Made one this past weekend. Worked great! Total cost less than 5 bucks for piece of metal and 3" pipe coupler at Lowes. The metal I got started to bend some, so I used a TV wall mount piece I had lying around to re-enforce. Still bent some, but got the job done perfectly.

 

I ground out 2 notches on the PVC with the bench grinder, where the metal piece sits.
Made them over 1/4 inch deep, then used a 1/4 inch thick piece of metal.
Don't drill the hole any bigger than the shaft or it will weaken the metal piece.
The idea is to get as much thread as possible for the nut to grab.
<spent the $73 I saved on beer>

 

Just use a piece of angle iron instead of flat plate. I make tools like this all the time for my bike projects. The last one was variator puller for a Honda Big Ruckus. I like to pull out the welder for making special tools. If PVC works well then it is PVC.
