Default Help with Fuel Tank Upgrade 1988 Sportster 883xlh

Hey there everyone!! I have a 1988 883xlh with a peanut tank and want to upgrade to a 3.5 or 4.5 tank. Does anyone know where I can find the proper tank to fit my bike? I have been scouring the internet looking for one and I think the problem is that I don't know the specs on the required tank or on my current tank. It is in a repair shop and I am trying to locate and order the tank to replace the current tank. Any advise or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What specs do you need? You know the make, model, and year of your bike. Petcock on the right side, although you could make a left side version work, no tank grommets. Not sure what else you need to know. Try emails to a couple vendors and ask them for the correct version. You can do it, we're all rooting for you.

There are a several years of tanks that will work. My 1991 tank would fit just like your stock tank.

That is what I needed to know. THANK YOU so much for that info. I think my question other than where the petcock is, is the mounting requirements of the new tank. I am not where my bike is and I want to order the new tank myself. I don't know how the old one mounts to the bike. Bolt placement etc. Can you help me with that?

Thanks again so much!

There's just a bolt up front and one in the real. It's a super basic mount, no rubber grommets or cushions. Since all the Sportster frames are the same from that period, they all should be designed for the same mounting system. Just two bolts, I forget their lengths, but slightly different. Good luck, should be pretty painless.
