1200 battery amps
Recently acquired 2004 roadster with a 3 year old battery-- when hot the starter would stall, but start on the next push of the button. I bought a new battery that shows 220 CCA and it does the same thing. Is this normal? The "HD" battery showed 240 CCA, but it was 3 years old. I carry a booster jumper, but so far it always starts on the second try. I guess these bikes don't have a compression release--right?

Very common especially on the higher compression 1200 especially in hotter climates/weather. It often occurs after a short stop like to refuel.
You can try pulling in the clutch, select 3rd or 4th gear, give the bike a push backwards with your feet and pop the clutch. This will back down the piston that's at TDC and reduce the cylinder pressure and the bike should start easier. Or ignore it and get use to 2 presses of the starter button.
