Wow good info again. I don't intend to swap primary (in spite of my title) and will end up going to the 28t front belt sprocket. That will most likely be enough especially after looking at those ratios posted. The 883 primary gearing is just too low for on road applications in a 1200, for me anyways.

I am going to save these ratios off line. Good stuff to know. Someday I would love to snag a solid mount sporty and make a dual sport, to what ever level I could afford, and those ratio calcs help make for a solid understanding. A dual sport does not need to cruise at 75-80 in my mind anyway, but that low gearing would sure make off roading easier. There sometimes slower is a LOT better.

This https://slo.craigslist.org/mcy/d/san...778129220.html would be a good starting point. Wish I had the cash to getvthis. Setup great as a dual sport donor. Duals in front, 883 gearing and spoked wheels.

That one is nice indeed, but I would go a different route & create a hardtail from it.

My back would not allow that.

Oh yes the dealership can do it , I got a quote of $185 bucks to do the job, and that’s just for labor after I supply all parts for them to install.
Then telling me that they had to use special tools and stuff to do it.
You can get the front pully holder from Dennis Kirk and a breaker bar from harbor freight for change and ya golden. Only thing I had to get extra was an exhaust gasket.

I have an exhaust gasket for the head, but would need a new one for the crossover pipe. Looking forward to this swap.

on a 2008+ US spec Sportster 1200. with pulleys of 29/68 at about 70 mph, the difference in 34/57 and 38/57 ratios gives the 34/57 combination about 400 more rpms at 70 mph.

34/57 @ 70.1 mph = 3650 rpms
38/57 @ 70 mph = 3250 rpms

Here is an online calculator for gear ratios-

Thanks. awsracing posted a complete rundown of the ratios a few posts up. My thread title has confused everyone. I only mean to swap the front belt sprocket not the primary. Sorry for the confusion there.
