Definitely just the bottom . All you're doing is smoothing out that corner , no more . It's just so you can get that last 20 degrees of turn . Take away as little material as possible from the horizontal part of the groove . As I say , just round off that corner .

Another reason why I love my '93.

Push it in, pull it out, and a temp gauge.

The pop-up top which screws in wouldn't screw all the way in on my 2005 Sporty unless I used large Channel Locks to force it. Then I had to use them to unscrew it. POOR DESIGN!
However, H-D does sell an aftermarket that is expensive (imagine that!) and it works:

I bought it, it fits and it works perfectly. It was very tight the first few times I used it but after that, I could use my fingers instead of Channel Locks. It is metal and it does not pop-up which is the way it should have been designed in the first place. I do recommend it.

H-D should have offered this in the first place for the 2004 and up models as standard, without the thermometer and then offered the thermometer model as an option.
I can't confirm the accuracy because I haven't checked it by placing it in boiling water but it is consistent in its readings. The lines on the dipstick are hard to see but if you use a white paper towel to check the level, it's no problem at all.

The new one is exactly what I have and I still has to file the lower corner down. That last little bit got very hard to twist. As I said before am getting arthritis but it was always difficult. A simple screw in cap would have sufficed.

HD has revised the cap twice and a newer version might do the trick on some bikes, current PN is 63000-04B and they are about $30.
Read somewhere that the current version appeared in 2011...

My bike came with this one but personally I would never have bought it. Just to say you have an oil temp gauge there because its useless where it is. If it came with a readout on the handlebars it might make sense but no way will anyone be able to read it in time to do anything about it should it get too hot.

I'm feeling rather pleased with myself for independently figuring out the same solution as other members . 😁
