Default What do you do for scratches and swirls on the gas tank?

Dropped some keys on the perfect, gloss black gas tank on my 2008 XL1200L, down low where the tank meets the seat. They're hard to see, but I know they're there and I curse myself every time I look at them. I'm looking at this
stuff: Sonax Perfect Finish. stuff: Sonax Perfect Finish.

I know I'm not the first idiot to do this. Anybody have some ideas how to make these things go away?

I'd say pull the seat off and follow the directions. Are the scratches deep?

If you can feel the scratch with a finger nail, generally they are too deep for polishing out. Without trying to teach you anything you are removing clear coat and it's quite thin so you don't have an infinite amount to get rid of deep scratches.

For swirls and low scratches I have been using Scholl. The S20 is a kind of one go product but they have a full range from compounding to fine finish.

I have used Menzerna but couldn't figure out their numbering system.

I would start by using a firm sponge and polish by hand and see how it goes. You can get sponge pucks designed for the job. If that doesn't work machines are expensive and so unless you intend to do much I would seek out a detailing shop to help you out.

No, not deep, just visible.

Thanks, I'll try some of this.

I use T-Cut Scratch Remover for just this kind of paint damage, I don't know if it is available in the USA, T-Cut is a tried and tested product here in the UK which has been around since 1954.

Good luck with removing the scratches in your tank.

It was one of those oh dear moments when cars got painted with water based paints and the original T-cut did nothing.

Scratch remover aka clear coat remover. The same as getting rid of a defect in wood, sand it down or plane it down until it's gone.

One final thought is to get clear coat and fill the scratch and then polish it out for a smooth edge finish.

I've used Harley brand swirl & scratch remover several times with good results. A little rubbing compound and a good polishing would do the trick too.

I've used Scratch Out and currently use Meguir's Scratch X with good results. Good luck with your project.
