Some peoples kids...
So I met a buddy of mine up at the bar this past Monday night to watch some pre-season football. we are up there shooting the breeze and one of the waitresses I know comes over to chat. I haven't seen her in a while and we are doing some catching up. She sees my helmet and asked what kind of bike I road... yada yada. This old timer who is sitting kitty-corner from me at the bar interrupts our conversation. He over heard me saying about how I get around 50mpg with my bike. He asks what kind of bike I have and I told him. He calls bull**** and says people don't buy Harleys for their fuel economy. I told the guy I wasn't kidding and I was dead serious. His exacts words to me "Son, if your Harley gets 50mpg, you should sell it on eBay for a million dollars because you have a one of a kind Harley." I took just about everything I had to not put this old man in his place. He backs that comment up with " I have an Ultra Classic and I am lucky when I see 10mpg." So I tell him my bike is EFI and jumps in and says "Yea so is my Ultra, and there is no way your bike is getting anything better than mine."
I really wonder how the hell some people survive in this world.

Well he's not right but niether are you, you can get 50 on a Harley if the weather is just right and you are going down hill with a good tail wind and only going 55MPH.
I have 3 Harleys and the only time I ever gotten the kind of milage was when my wifes bike was still an 883 with all the above advantages.
40 is a good average, when you get a high number once and go around saying your bike gets x amount of mileage, that's just B.S.
Sorry dude!!!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have an '08 Nightster with 1800 miles on it. I'm on mostly backroads, but do a fair amount of stop/go in city traffic (Albany, NY) to get to the suburbs. I've never gotten below 46 mpg on a tank - mostly 48 to 51 (max).

I was averaging 50mpg on my SB (49-51) for the first 2500 miles stock except for V&H slip ons. I drive 70 for 23 miles on one highway and 60 for another 25 on another highway each way to work. It dropped to an average of 47mpg (46-48) over the last 800 miles after the stage one air cleaner and XIEDS were added.
