old aluminum

old aluminum
I should probably put this in "detailing" section, but will stop here first. My '95 883 shows some dull yellowish color on the motor and cooling fins and the primary, cam, and sprocket covers are fading. What can I use to make the old aluminum look good again. I have searched the forum and some suggestions are the S100 engine brightner and various polishes. Does anyone have a "trick" that they use to clean theirs or any other suggestions. THANKS!!

mine was the same way, and I ended up stripping all the clear coat off those parts and polishing them. I have to polish them once a season now though, so keep that in mind. The other option would be to sand them to the brushed stock look, and have them re-cleared or powder coated or something.

I'd think the yellowing of the fins/engine was old oil that's building up over time. Clean the whole engine really good with something like Simple Green, and then buff/polish out the old aluminum. A good polishing job should make that aluminum look almost like chrome. You can sand out any pitting/scratches using finer and finer sandpaper, and then buff/polish with something the Powerball, or a drill with a polishing wheel, or even as small as a dremel with polishing wheel using finer & finer polishing compounds. I just did my front fork lowers & headlight eyebrow this past winter and they came out top notch.
