Default XR-1200 Engine Performance Mods

Can anyone tell me if there are any proven performance engine mod kits available for the XR-1200? Screaming Eagle has Sportster Heads and Cams but it doesn't specify whether or not they will work on the XR. I've also looked at Zipper's Website and they have a 1200 Hammer Kit but again, doesn't specify for XR or just XL. Is there any real difference between the standard XL Engine and the ones on the XR? I seem to remember reading that the XR has a higher compression ratio than the XL but that's about all I could find out.

I'm considering purchasing an XR but after test riding one it's clear that something needs to be done to bring power up to par with the suspension and brakes.

ok the xr1200 is the tops your getting out of a stock oem sportster and stay away from the screamin eagle heads they are the 1200 heads the xr1200 already has milled down to raise the compression thats it, if you really want to amp the power up past oem then go to NRHS or Revolution Performance for headwork, theres also a proven race team that does headwork they sell on ebay pretty cheap and although theyre not yet well known their work is really getting rave reviews on ebay for selling headwork on par with RevPerf and NRHS. the xr1200 has a lightened flywheel, .551 cams 2into1 ceramic pipes, weight reduction and upgraded suspension over the regular 1200s so going with the xr1200 your getting a lot of free upgrades over a regular 1200.
getting headwork will really give you a performance boost

Thanks for the feedback. Will the stock XR cams perform well with modified heads? Any suggestions on an EFI Tuner to go with the headwork?

them .551 cams kick buttand can work with stock xr1200 and modified pretty good too, but the team doing your headwork can custom work for your .551 cams in mind and they'll give you some directions on what EFI to match their work better than anyone.
them .551 cams are awesome and if you need wild cams then you can simply send them off to redshift em into whatever lift you need

There are a number of aftermarket exhaust systems that have come out for the XR1200 and there is a magazine article out that does a comparison between all of the aftermarket exhaust systems and gives their opinion as to what is the best bang for the buck. Less weight and a boost in lower end torque or less weight and more top end horse power seem to be the two recommended choices between all of the exhaust systems. I have seem a larger air cleaner out on the market but, to me, it takes away from the looks a bit.

Appreciate all the feedback. I've been riding modified Big Twins for the past 20 years and expect nothing less in terms of performance than what I've been able to achieve from them.

I've been spending a lot of time on the road lately with friends who ride Sport Bikes and although I have no intention of becoming a knee dragging Kawabusa rider I would like something that can keep up when we hit the twisties.
My Big Twin has the ***** but it doesn't handle like the XR can.

I've read the Exhaust Article that XLCR4GM is referring to. Good comprehensive comparo but I know at a minimem that I'm going to have to modify the heads/ECM to achieve the performance that I'm looking for.

I was really hoping to find a pre-packaged top end kit that comes with heads/cylinders/pistons/cams, a pre-mapped ECM module, modified throttle body, gaskets, Air Filter etc... I really don't want to buy a bike only to take it off line to send off heads/cams for re-work but if that's what it takes I may consider it.

I agree 100% with xr1200nl on the TM recommendation. Seems like good stuff and they use Dyno charts to show increases in Torque and Horsepower over stock numbers. I have been thinking about going with their exhaust system myself and a few other goodies that they sell too! Good luck with your decisions and ride safe out there!
