Default 1200 Sporty vs. '86 Honda Magna V45?

A co-worker of mine and I are doing a day trip on Saturday. I've never ridden with him before and am looking forward to the trip. He rides an '86 Magna V45. Through a bit of googlery, I found out his bike makes 80bhp/46 lb ft. of torque, or at least it did when it was new. I'm reasonably sure it's bone stock.

We were joking around a bit about running the bikes from a light. I'm running SEII slip-ons and a SE AC. Even though he's probably got me edged in HP by a good bit, I'm assuming I'd eat him off the line with the big torque advantage I've got.

Anyone ever owned or ridden an older V45? Are they pretty quick?

He has no power advantage, his bike is rated at the crankshaft. Your's is real rear wheel power. He'll loose 10-15% by the time it gets to the rear wheel. Plus you have a tremendous torque advantage.

I use to have an '84 V45 Interceptor with 86hp and 45lbs. My 1200c with 75/75 is much quicker than my old Interceptor.

You'll be quicker off the line, he'll probably have more top end.

He'll have you on the top. I had an '84 VF700 Sabre. The Honda V4 is an amazing engine, but not built for torque. Also, he's gonna be giving up power due to the shaft drive. Plus you're talking about a 15 year old bike.

I think he will be able to take you from light to light. Its a quick bike really. I had a 800cc Intruder and bone stock it would eat up any 1200 sporty light to light. Hate to say it but dont run for pinks , you;ll be walking. just my opinion.

I used to ride a V65 1100 Sabre back in the day. It had serious power, but the V45 is only a 750. Mine would wheelie without clutching it.

Absolutely. Great advice. A slower vehicle can/will often beat a quicker one if the operator is better. So, be better!

I knew a guy who had a V65 Sabre, and he bought the stickers from a V45, put them on. Used to surprise a lot of people!
