Default Ye ole Smoked Stator

The HD dealer diagnosed my 93 Sporty that I just bought as having a "smoked" stator. Guess I should have known something was wrong with the occasional backfiring. The small dealer where I bought salesman told me that was normal, & I wanted to believe.

Anyway, is it OK to drive this bike around until the stator is fixed? Plan on getting at least a new voltage regulator too along w/ the stator. It won't damage wires, breakers, or battery?

Don't know if it will cause damage but if it were me I would get it fixed before continuing to ride. Electrically issues are not good on any vehicle.

If "smoked" means something like not working then you won't damage much ... it will just strand you somewhere with dead battery ... that in turn is not good for battery.

No, It won't hurt anything at all that isn't already damaged to ride around with a bad stator. But, you're really gonna be pissed when there is finally zero electrical on the bike, and you're standing on the side of the road.

If the stator is really bad...that standing on the side of the road won't take very long at all.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll get it in asap to be fixed.

Anybody ever do the 38A 3-phase kit? Guess I should have just the new stator and regulator put on for less than half the cost.

Miami dealer put in a new stator for $450 in case you are wondering about cost.

HD dealer here in KCMO quoted $320 for the job - about $120 for stator & 2hrs labor about $200. Stator only though.

I'm going to have an outside shop do a new stator & voltage regulator for $100 labor @ $50/hr. Looking to get the Cycle Electric parts myself.

Unless I go with that 3-phase 38A kit then it would be about $600 or so for all that.

FYI, here's a pic attached of my removed smoked stator.

Those guys couldn't believe I rode it all the way in there. Along with the broken shifter knuckle & clutch cable bad. Had ridden it about 100 miles since buying it too.

Virge, could you please remove that pic with the dogs? Everytime I see you post somewhere, I just keep scrolling down until I don't see it anymore.
