HD makes a nice little helmet lock attachment for under $30, but I use a gun lock...

I have a good looking face and a smart brain behind it. My head is easily worth more than $400 which is why I don't hesitate to buy nice Snell approved helmet. If your head is worth $40, that's your call.

. . . the price of helmet does not mean more protection. A $40 DOT helmet can be as effective as a $400 over-priced Snell. And yes, I am quite fond of my head and I always ride with good helmet, but it doesn't have to cost $400.

Any quality racetrack only allows Snell approved helmets for racers. Ill put my helmet up against yours any day.

Say what? I am quite happy with my DOT Outlaw Skull cap half helmet, I like to hear and see what is going on around me. No offense taken or given - to each his own. (and I don't spend much time, make that zero time on racetrack with my HD).

And guess what, I have a full face HD Snell helmet that I never wear.

Snell standards are different than DOT. They both have impact requirements, but Snell takes it a big step further with a more specific impact section (kinda like hitting it with a hammer). The Snell requirements end up making the helmet very firm, while the DOT tends to flex. There's been argument that for motorcycle riders, Snell is actually worse than DOT since the DOT helmet will flex while the Snell will not, therefore sending more shock to the rider's head. I believe it was the June '05 issue of Motorcyclist.

Do your own research, of course, and make your own decisions. As far as locking mine up, I had a pair of leather gloves stolen off my bike once, so I no longer leave my helmet unlocked. I carry it with me, but am looking for a locking system. I'm not looking to make it impossible to steal, but reduce someone's motivation to do so. A simple padlock through the D ring on the strap locked to damned near anything on the bike would even help.

If you have a FF go with what GWinkleman said. Anything less they can steal. They can easily cut the strap as easily they can sell it. Trust me, it was a $400 lesson that I learned the hard way.

And don't act like a noob when you pull up to a spot. a thief can spot one a mile a way.

As far as Snell and DOT approved helmets goes, what really matters is what kind of riding someone does. Some are meant for the tracks, some are meant for slow impact collisions. The price of a helmet does not dictate that it's better, it just means it has more bells n whistles from graphics, to hardware and to materials.

If someone really values their head they should do the proper research for the helmet that suits them best.

Personally, I'd rock my sportster without a helmet but that's me.
