rear pulley
Hello guys,
I would need your help, please. Unfortunaly, I do not own a Harley (yet), but I hope in the future.
I would like to buy a used rear pulley, 61T and 1 1/8 width, to put to my actual bike and understood that rear pulley from Sportster will fit ...(reason is decreasing cruising RPM; my actual rear pulley has 66T 1 1/4).
Searching into ebay by „pulley 61 1 1/8”, I have found few different Part Numbers of the pulleys. Can you please tell me what are the differences between this three Part Numbers ? Is some dimensions which are different ? For me, all looks the same
Part Number 40246-91

Part Number 4563-04-045

Part Number 4734

Thank you in advance.

Hi Marcel and welcome to HDF from the UK.
You don't mention what your current bike is. A change from 66T to 61T is 8% and depending on your bike could be too much of a change IMHO. I certainly wouldn't do that to my Sportster.
For your interest the 61T rear pulley was fitted to International Harleys, to help them meet tight noise regulations and killed performance, because the gearing was so high! I bought my 1990 Glide new and changed the original 61T to a stock USA spec 70T.

Hello,
First, many thanks you for your replies.
Sorry, forgot to mention my current bike, It's an Yamaha Raider 1900 cc.
(HD, hope for the future)
My intention is to decrease the stock rear wheel ratio, to have less vibrations at cruising speed. Stock rear pulley has 66T and few guys told me that it fits the Sporster pulley which has 61T, but need also a new belt (shorter one).
Thanks
Marcel

Hi Marcel, we may be riding through Romania later this year! Personally I would leave well alone. Most modern bikes have high gearing already, to reduce engine speed and meet noise regulations. Some vibration with a big twin is inevitable and raising gearing by 8% will hurt performance.
What road speed do you like to ride at and what rpms does that currently give?

To clarify, you are asking if a Sportster 61T rear pulley will work on your 1900cc Yamaha Raider as the stock rear pulley on the Yamaha is 66T (front is 32T), correct?
I am sure you talked with a Yamaha dealer on any different sizes available from Yamaha? How about the front pulley? Does Yamaha sell a larger size (34T or ?).
I don't know if a Sportster rear pulley will work (or Sportster after market). You might be able to adapt one by changing rear axle spacers, etc. Also need to ensure the bolt hole pattern matches, etc. Almost anything is possible if you are good at what we call "monkey wrenching"...making something that is not designed for something actually work on it.
If you run a 1 1/8 pulley, yes, as you know, you have to go with a belt sized for that width
and with that much decrease definately a new belt (pretty sure you don't have enough rear wheel adjustment to compensate).
Who was it who mentioned that you might be able to use a Sportster pulley on your Yamaha? Do they know anyone who did it?

Thank you very much for replies.
Some guys, owners of Yamaha Raider, did it, put the Sporster rear pulley, but don't know details. i know only that should fit, maybe some spacers is needed.
This is no problem for me, I'm a real "monkey wrenching" .
I'm fully aware about losing some performance indicators, but the bike has lot of torque and HP.
I would ask also, which belt manufacturer is best ? I read that Gates are producing the best belts (kevlar).
@grbrown : depends which road will you chose to enter into Romania (my town name is Arad, next to Hungarian border), . If you are using the most used one, I live at 500 meters from this main road (via Arad). You should announce me, maybe I will came with you, or maybe you want to sleep one night !!! Please look on the map where is Arad located !!!
