Default Exhaust Decisions? and Questions

I have an 08 1200xl custom and right now I have SE slipons and k&n aircharger intake with fuel moto micro tuner. I like power but looks are also a big thing for me. I am not happy with the exhaust anymore and want to upgrade. I like the all chrome look so of course i love the Vance & Hines short shots but i hear they aren't good for power on the upper end? So i was wondering what kind of exhaust everybody else had luck with?? Or if anyone has the short shots or double barrels and hasn't noticed a power loss? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want 2-2 pipes and like the Shot Shots, you might check out the V&H Side Shots. The Side Shots have a stepped tuned header and dyno tests show them to be good performers.

I had Short Shots on my 07 XL1200C and they looked great. However, they are obnoxiously loud, and you will notice low end torque loss.......so basically they are for looks only.....plus EVERYBODY has them on their bikes. If I could do it all over again, I would have focused more on performance and sound over looks.

I don't have a link to it, but xlforum.net has dyno comparisons of many popular pipes. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Hope I'm allowed to mention that forum here.

The V&H Short Shots are great with the optional quiet baffles. The loss of power (torque) comes from the lack of exhaust back pressure with the regular open baffles. Replacing it with the quiet baffles restores the back pressure and give the exhaust note a deep, throaty sound. I added additional fiberglass baffle material to the input side of the baffle. You can adjust the level of sound that way.........because Short Shots are obnoxiously loud with the standard baffles. If you want the exhaust to sound like the stock pipes, then wrap the entire input side. I experimented with different amounts, and I have mine wrapped with two rows of ports open.........now it's reasonably loud with a sweet deep, throaty sound. I love it!
