Default Stage 1 or stage 2

I am new to the seen. I have a 2012 ultra classic I wanted to put a stage 1 kit. Just air breather and programmer. The harley shop said I should do a stage 2 kit Said I would be a lot happier. I am just looking for some advice if it is really worth it. Thanks

Stage 2 is worth it. Night and day difference in power and performance. Gotta open up that exhaust though.

Depends what your goal and budget is?? The SE book has dyno sheets for the stages to get an idea of the differences. There are much better performance deals in the aftermarket...

My RK has a stage 2, 95ci big bore kit and the power difference compared to my friends 88ci is very noticeable. If you are planning on keeping the bike for many years to come, I would invest on the stage 2. But if you like to change bikes every couple of years, stage 1 is my recommendation.

Good luck.

There you go- numbers rather than opinions or sales pitches.

alot of us are running around on under $500 stage 1's...some pay over $2k for stage 1 ( drop it off at the dealer and full retail...") a stage 1 will get you 7 to 10 horsepower.( this is simply by removing the restrictions to flow in the stock intake and exhaust which are part of the emissions control)
reliable and retains MPG
Most of us will have an exhaust system with no cat, either replacing the headers with aftermarket or decatted from ebay ( $150) or cutting and welding ours.( whethr we

just about all the hi flow intake kits will potentially flow more than the motor could ever demand- the value leader is the ness big sucker with chrome backing plate- about $120 on ebay from easternpc

a "stage 2" is generally adding cams and good for another 10 hp or so ( again look at dyno curves) reliability may be affected as will MPG depending on the parts chosen.

if we use any unfamiliar terms, post back with questions

Mike

I can't be messing with 'stage' this or that! Mufflers air filter and cam plus a decent tuner will give worthwhile improvements. A stock EPA bike has quiet mufflers and airbox, which everyone knows about, but it also has compromised ignition and cam timing. It's worth sorting them all out in one go.
