Default cost to change belt?

Anyone have experience changing a belt on a 06 street glide? Time or miles before change should be done? I am told the cost is $4000 to change the belt along with everything that should be changed at the same time, like the clutch.

Does this sound right?

member posted last week about $1200 his quote at a dealer. indys may do better

belt replacement requires inner and outer primary cases come off, also the compensator and clutch...and the swingarm.

this is the time to look at tranny shaft bearing, inner primary bearing, swingarm bushings etc. also the front pulley.

the rear pulley, primary chain and clutch can easily be serviced at anytime without removing a bunch of stuff in the way so no huge reason to do it at the same time- although the labor is already being paid for ( it costs a tech no extra time to remove and old chain and put a new one on- so no extra charge)

$4k is nuts

find another shop

I did the drive belt on my FXRP ( also a rubbermount) as I recall the part costs ( 1993) were negligible under $200- removing the stuff in the way and the swing arm was the big one. I did it myself.

I have seen belts pop at 40K...and seen belts go well over 100k

I can change a belt in 2-3 hours flat. It's really nothing.
Looks like is some huge job but it really isn't that hard at all.

You'd inspect for actual broken/worn beyond service parts before changing them as well.
If your clutch is working fine, don't change it.

If for instance you actually needed to change "everything" out you'd be looking at:

60 for a primary service gasket kit, to include shifter seal.
340 for a SE compensator with Rotor.
530 for a completely new clutch.
280 for a new final drive belt.
80 for a primary chain.
200 for any other odds and ends, chain tensioner and IPB as well.
200 for swingarm bearings, mounts etc.

Nowhere near 4k. Crazy.

Around 4 hours to do mine. About $150 for the belt.

You guys have missed that the OP is also asking the miles your belt had on them when they required changing which i am kinda curious about too.

And i agree,$4k is completely out of line and way overpriced & that a new clutch if current one isnt slipping or acting up isnt needed along with other items that are involved in the belt change that are still i good serviceable cond with many miles left to go on them should not need replacement either.

Just use good judgement and if you (or wrench working on the bike) see's things like prim chain being loose & stretched out and or pad on prim chain adj worn out with deep tracks from chain wear then have them replaced while your in there, same goes for drive pulley and or compensator etc.

But dont change parts that look to be in good cond that seem to have plenty of wear or miles left in them esp if they can be accessed with just outter prim case removed.

Good luck

Scott

as above I've seen 40k~100k+

my own experience is 48K on the FXRP...the CHP hammered it for 38K..I was none too kind for 10K.

on my Evo FLHTC I had to service the swingarm at about 72K so I did the belt while the swingarm was off...the old one looked pretty good.

in both cases the pulleys were fine- but on the FXR I elected for a 61T to get a 15% overdrive- this requires the softail belt

Those belts are tough. Under normal conditions unless it gets cut 100k miles should be no problem. I had a 84 low rider with belt drive. It had 40k on it when I bought it and it had a small puncture right in the middle of the belt. The previous owner just filled the small hole with silicon sealant. Last I heard it has close to 100k and still has the original belt. That old shovel wasn't exactly a power house but it does speak to the strenght of the belt.
