I seem to get confused in regards to the various Loctite products. When someone talks about the medium strength (blue), do they mean: 242, 243, 248, 249, etc

or high strength (red), do they mean: 262, 268, 271, 272, 277, etc

I never lose sleep over the numbers. Although I have been using Prematex Threadlockers for a while now and they only have the colors. For the most part purple for really small screws, use this only on RC airplanes and cars. Blue for small bolts, red for big bolts and green is for wicking. There is a few specific choices for red but there is only 1 choice for blue and purple.

At home I have found no use for anything other than blue except for purple for some hobbies. Even then I used to use blue and will probably go back to that when the purple runs out.

 

Loctite is great stuff and necessary for a number of applications but the link lists tread sealant for oil, primary, and transmission drain plugs. Thread sealant is for tapered threads, Harley plugs have straight threads and rely on an O ring to seal the fluids. nothing else needed.

 

The Harley drain plugs may have straight threads, but I just performed the first oil change on mine, and it had thread sealer on all three plugs from the factory.

 

Right or wrong I dunno, I don't use any sealant on my drain plugs either, I know it came with thread sealant but I also rely on a new o ring each time with no issues.

 

The drain plugs should have Loctite 555, it's available at the dealer. It's a non hardening sealer. The service manual (on the '15 touring bikes at least) call for it as well as the o-ring.
