Default Clutch issues

Bought a used bike, 09 ultra classic with 26k on it, it now has 28k miles on it and I've owned it less than a month and the clutch fried on the way back fro
Cali.. Slips bad in 4,5,6,th gears.. Think the dealer will step up or am I eating a new clutch on a bike I've owned less than a month and literally have less than 2k miles.. And no I'm not a new rider so I know it wasn't me.. Clutch on my dyna is still original at 31k miles..

They will blame it on you as they make you buy a new one.

Dont know if dealer will step up but maybe you could talk him into giving you a discount on an ESP because your going to need with that 09 bike.

I bought an 09 from original owner 11/2014 with only 9,700 miles on it and so far the compensator , front wheel bearings along with EFI connector on throttle body behind air cleaner have all gone bad in the past 6months & 8k miles needing replacement and now IPB is starting to make a little noise so thats on its way out too.

I am thinking with 18k miles currently on the bike that the ipb will likely need replacement at maybe 22k-25k miles or so sometime in next yrs 2016's riding season here in NY state where riding season is just about done.

I got an ESP after the 1st issue i had with the bike soon after i got it which was the compensator that i replaced myself.

But the rest of the things that went bad have been covered by the esp as will the IPB when its making enough noise that the HD dealer deems it bad enough to replace under the ESP too.

I really like my 09 flhtcu but the fact is they have more then their fair share of mechanical /quality issues so be aware your 09 hd wont be bullet proof.

BTW,since you said clutch has been slipping bad in higher gears the plates are likely NG/warped etc form overheating when slipping ,but all you need to fix it is new clutch plates and i'd also rec the hvy dty hd clutch spring while you at it along with a new outer prim case gasket and prim case oil too.

Shouldn't cost that much for the parts if you order then from surdyke hd online and you can save on labor if you do the work yourself as its an easy job for novice wrench if dealer wont cut you some slack and help you out giving you free labor or parts at cost, etc.

If the motor is stock or at stage 1 the HD's hvy dty clutch spring with new stock clutch plates is all you need ,but also check the steel spacers that go inbetween the clutch plates for flatness to ensure they are not warped and if they are warped replace them too.

If they chk out ok and are nice & flat i'd hit them with some black 600 grt paper on a smooth flat surface to remove any glazing or abnormalities from the metal spacer plates when clutch plates where slipping on them possibly overheating & discoloring them or glazing the surface that could reduce grip of new clutch plates.

shame you didn;t have a tool kit with you on the trip.

you could have solved that as soon as you noticed.

If the bike was sold "as is" I would have done the full clutch adjust ss soon as I got it home, but that's just water over the dam now.

Called the dealership and waiting for a call back.. Figured was just fibers.. And I did have a tool kit with me.. I was able to get it adjusted to make it home.. But it gave like little to zero notice. So did the battery, it crapped out 6 days after I got it home as well lol.. And it's not slipping at all in the first few.. Trust me I know about frying clutches from the old 125 2 stroke days being 6'1" 165 on a 125 lol.. Just sucks have had the bike less than a month and have to shell out cash for parts..I have te warranty but they were like it's not covered.. Oh well I'll let ya all know why the dealer says.. I've bought 3 bikes from them so they better step up..

Please tell me how a tool kit would have helped with a properly adjusted clutch with 28k miles on it slipping? I'm not dumb when it comes to wrenching, I was prepared for the ride. I was just trying to see if you all would think the dealer would help out since it was less than a month old..

Did I the first day I got it home, as well as pulled wheels, inspected bearings, chained fluids etc.. Come it's harley you think I would trust them on a used bike that they "checked" over???
