Default Oil Coolers

Hello,

I'm sure to open a can of worms with this question, but here goes:

I live in Houston, TX. Gets really hot n humid down here. I am thinking of installing an oil cooler on my 2000 FLHUCUI. Do you think I need one? Im sure the motor company will say No. This would be like admitting to a design flaw.

What do you people think and suggest?

Thank you.

Mike

An oil cooler only works if you're up to speed. If you are stuck in stop n go traffic, it won't do any good. There is a fan add on that might help. I live in Pearland and was thinking the same thing but haven't done anything yet.

I might disagree a little bit, sitting in stop and go traffic prevents the airflow over the jugs, and she do get hot...depends on where you are...

I'm in Yuma, slam in the middle of the desert, and an oil cooler is pretty much an essential. Others on the forum have tales of bikes going down during parades and slow moving traffic...

My $.02

I hear that. When the temp here is 95 and the dew point is near 80, those heads are frying my rump while sitting in traffic. For sure.

Doesn't it stand to reason that even if little or no air flow exist, if you have fins exposing heat to air that at least some heat will disipate if the air is cooler than the fins/oil? I have to beleive that the oil cooling radiator has to give some benefit.(Why would Harley install them as standard equipment on the screeming eagles if not?) After installing an in dash oil temp. gage today and seeing oil temps of 200 plus at 75 mph on a 70 degree day, makes me feel as if an oil cooler will help alot on those hot summer days. I saw cooler oil temps. at lower speeds in town? This will change on hotter days I'm sure. SO...I have an oil cooler ordered from Harley and will probably go to Moble v-twin oil as well to see if the oil temps. will say lower. ...My 2 cents worth...

Interesting. I didnt know they were standard on the Screamin Eagles. That answers my question.

Thanks everyone for the input! With an oil cooler and the SYN3 oil (which I already use), this hopefully will keep the temp close to range.

I was going to ask the same question, my buddie and I (+ wives) are going to Cali. across to Nevada, then up through Montana back to Alberta in july, he has a 97 FXDWG and i hope to have a new road king by then. We are debating weather or not to do it....... (Nevada in july sounds pretty hot to me, never been there)!!

We just purchased our new Ultra and are having a 103" kit , htcc heads, and hi-comp pistons ( 6-Speed too). I am having the super premium cooler installed. One immediate benefit is that the system has an additional quart of oil in it for capacity to contain heat, in addition to cooling benefits. A peculiar item is that the Screaming Eagle Cooler is thermostatically controlled, while the current coolers (Supposed to be "new" generation" are full time flow.

Just my 2 cents,

Bruce

I live in the desert of AZ...it's HOT, most have them, and at that time of year, it won't hurt...most riders I know have them here...

Hope this helps.
