I bought this bike in February 2016. It had 53K miles on it.

According to the Previous Owner, It had cam chain tensioners, cams and high flow oil pump upgrade done at 40k.

She has about 78K miles on her now. Do I need to worry about the Cam Chain Tensioners again?

 

It would be worth your time to take a look at them.

 

Excellent idea to take a look...keep in mind that it's often the inner one that gets more wear...and it's dern near impossible to see it well from the outside.

 

Depends just what having those things 'done' actually means! He could have had a SE upgrade kit put in, which is a good choice, but as suggested it would be worth checking. There are old threads around HDF on how to check, also there are bound to be on-line videos, some of which involve using a dentist's mirror.

 

This what mine looked at 38,000 miles. They all very mine was set with sprockets within .001 inch. Took mine apart for oil pressure.

If after inspection, I need to have this done again, would it be a good time to do cams as well? I am pretty sure everything in there is just stock.

I have 2 statements about the bike:

1. The Cams and cam chain tensioners were replaced in January 2005 at around 26K miles. (Dealer looked up by VIN for me)
2. Cam chain tensioners,cams and high flow oil pump upgrade done at 40k. (from the Indy who had the bike on display for his customer for sale)

I have a call into the Indy to see if he has better information for me. From what I read, I don't think hydraulic tensioners were available in 2005. If they weren't done at 40K I might be sitting on a time bomb. UGH!

 

Retrofit kits,were available for them. So hopefully that was done at that time.
Cam choices depend on the type of riding you do and any future engine mods you may have in mind.

 

1. That was probably done with upgraded parts,
2. That was 14k miles later, which the indy should be able to confirm and were quite probably an SE kit or similar,
3. If so you are not sitting on a time bomb!

Take a deep breath - count to a large number - think calm thoughts!

The very fact you have an upgraded oil pump tells us you have a decent upgraded engine.

 

Nope, the Indy said he didn't do it. Gotta call the stealer to see if they have record of the part numbers used and if it were upgraded parts.

 

I went with S&S gear driven cams on my 06 Heritage and never looked back. Bike has right at 100K and still going strong
