Who has installed these and what are your impressions? I love the look but I'm also into function.
Two main question for me....
#1. Does it negatively affect engine cooling?
#2. Does it have any impact on wind management?
Thanks in advance.
I installed my in 2010. They never been off!. The MoCo did some testing that they induct air to cool the motor. These along w/ the Dog Bowl, Engine Guard shields and any flip up windscreen make very clean air. Some people take theirs off come summer. I don't, they stay on year round and think they really complete the Rig in my opinion.
However, My Rig is old and pre Rushmore. Still they still make those 3 items that I mention above along a flip style wind screen
and it's simply Nirvana!
i first got lowers on my 2010 road glide, then when i sold that, i had them repainted for my cvo road glide. both of those were pre rushmore. after the cvo got totaled i bought a 2019 road glide and one of the first purchases i made was fairing lowers along with a proper windscreen. even in the hot louisiana summer, i leave them on. i did replace the front panel on them with the screen from the twin cool lowers which allows more airflow.
i don't care for the 'dog bowl', i found that it just increased the heat i felt without any real benefit in wind management. that is to say that without it wasn't bad, and it didn't change much with it.
the 'snap on' guards that go from the fuel tank to the crash bar i think are a worthwhile purchase. i used the ones from my wife's 2012 on my 2019, even though the newer ones are designed a little differently, the old ones still work.
from your itty bitty picture, it looks like your bike is vivid black? if it is, you can go to amazon and buy a set of chinese takeoff lowers for a little over $100. that's a cheap enough investment to see if you like them or not. these lowers on my bike are the chinese takeoffs. they look and work fine. are they hd quality? no, but they are down low and are right in the blast area where they get hit with all kinds of road trash so i don't mind not spending harley money on something that is gonna get dinged, sandblasted, etc.
@skratch Yes I am on a '2020 RG standard. I really prefer the look of the poem "style" lowers. I think they're much more traditional looking and really make the RG pop. I have a set of the Chinese lowers on my wish list on Amazon right now. I putchased a set for my '19 Heritage but didn't care for the look and had to hack them up to make them work so I removed them. The fact that you are in Louisiana helps make this decision easier as I am in South Texas and have similar weather.
Do they allow as much air as needed to cool the motor?
I will look for a set of the wind guards as well. I checked the website and they don't appear to be all that expensive.
As an aside, I'm originally from New Orleans and moved to Texas when I was 8. both my folks are from there as well with my mom being from Golden Meadow and my dad from Grande Isle. :Loved it down there.
Thanks to you and @09 YELLOWBIRD fir all the info. It is greatly appreciated. Ride safe.
i've never had an issue with the engine running hot while using lowers. now, you will feel more heat, but it isn't so much that it's unbearable. and it doesn't mean that the engine is running hotter either. even though you're ordering the chinese take offs, if you get the screens for the twin cooled lowers, they'll fit just fine and give you a little more air flow while moving. they aren't expensive, about $30 for the pair.
Another thing they do is help when it rains.
6 bikes, all going about 300 miles on this trip, 5 Ultra Limited and one street glide with no lowers. It started pouring, the type of pouring that you can see the white line in front of you and car lights when they're about 10 yards away. Doing maybe 45 max. When we stopped for gas and at each dealership to get poker chips, the couple with the street glide changed socks. The rest of us were wondering what was going on until we figured out they didn't have lowers and even though our feet got a bit wet too, theirs were enough that they could wring out their socks after 5 minutes.
Surprised me how much dryer the rest of us were, foot-wise.
