Default Sources for good used painted tins

Hi all,

I committed a huge sin and put a gouge in the side of my gas tank. What I would like to know, are there any bike salvage yards, etc. that might sell good painted tanks? I think it might be as cheap to buy a good quality used tank with the same paint scheme as it would be to repair mine. The gouge went right through the two tone and decal!

Thanks all,

Seabee

Tried that right away. Surprisingly few on there! The must be some bike salvage yards around the Country that specialize in parting out "totaled" bikes with many good parts. There is a salvage yard intranet for car parts, but I haven't found one for bikes...………...

look on some of the harley swap pages on facebook. i've seen lots of ads for painted parts. make sure you pay via PayPal and not through facebook though. you want the buyer protection.

Most large wrecking yards are now 'supposedly' connected via a common database. So, if you call ABC salvage, they should see that DEF parts has it and order it n for you. Its been my experience that it never works though. My suggestion is to just scour the Google and hit several of the larger yards. Depending on the year of your bike, finding a tank in better condition may be hard. You may want to ask your local dealership who does their paint repair.

Ebay. The odds of finding a clean used tank, for a certain model, from a particular year, in a particular color? Yup, checkin' the 'Bay, every day, might take a while. I hope you find one!

I damaged my tank several years back, luckily I had full coverage. HD will paint you an exact match, spanking new replacement tank at their factory. Took around 8 weeks and cost me (insurance) $600.

Thanks for the replies. I've been scouring the web, but little luck. It looks like a decent used tank goes for around $300.00 w/good paint. I may just get mine fixed, but I'm sure it will be twice that!
