ok I know this is a strange place to ask but I've search the web and cant find much info so I was hoping some of you reformed Honda to Harley guys could help. My 19 year oldson rides a 85 V65 Magna and just about 2 weeks ago it started jumping out of 2nd gear, if you skip 2nd all the other gear hold fine,I searched the web and seen a few places were some guys said it was a problem but I'm not finding a fix if there is one besides rebuilding the transmission. Thanks in advance for any info
I would think that going from first to third is not a problem on that bike, I sure as heck wouldn't put big money into the bike for tranny work.(no offense).
I would not call myself a reformed Honda to Harley guy. I still think Honda makes the best motorcycles on the planet. I still own one and probably will till they put me in the ground or I can't get out of my wheel chair any longer. To helpyou with your question though. My next door neighbor has a V65 and he says what your discribing is not a wide spread porblem but it will be very expensive to go into the tranny. He says there is a V65 forum like this than you can go to and might find some answers. Be aware it is just like this also in that you might get a bunch of bs also. Do a Goggle and see what you come up with and good luck.
I would do a clutch adjustment. I never owned one of these, but I have owned many Hondas and don't recall this as a common problem on any of them in any of the forums I may have frequented.
I also would not conisider it a wide spread problem. You will need to split the case in order to get to the trans. but when you do you will see the problem.
the sabmag board (www.sabmag.org) then go to the general interest and the v-fileswill help and it is a fairly common problem on the V65 Sabre and Magna as I owned a 1984 and it started having the problem and my friend had 1985 V65 Sabre and he had to rebuild the tranny as his was totally failing.
My 19 year old son rides a 85 V65 Magna and just about 2 weeks ago it started jumping out of 2nd gear, if you skip 2nd all the other gear hold fine... [is there] a fix if there is one besides rebuilding the transmission.
I remember those bikes... a buddy got one in '83 or '84(?) when I got my first-year Interceptor. Didn't care too much for his but my bike was the sweetest ride I've ever had.
Could be a bent/worn shifter fork and/or the dogs on the gearset are rounded off. Well, definitely at least one of the two. Likely not worth fixing anymore unless it's just a fun project and his/your wrenching time is worth little-to-nothing. Just wondering, does it jump out of gear on acceleration, deceleration, or both?
Anyway, you may want to look at another used bike instead of sinking a lot into this one. There are still plenty out there. Don't forget it is 22 years old now!
I would think the shifter for would be the problem too. I had one (83 V65) that would occasionally slip out of 2nd into a "false neutral" if I shifted into 2nd at too high of an RPM. I ran it as a drag bike for a while and could get in the the mid 11s with it. Fast bikes. Like a few have already stated, t might be cheaper to just find another used one if you have to rebuild the tranny.
