Check the star wheel behind clutch? That is where you would want to start. you will see a roller on a spring loaded lever. It fits into the star wheel holds the gear. See if the star wheel in loose? back out screw , clean use lock tight (blue). tighten. If this is not the problem?
1. worn shift fork bolt -follows shift cam groves.
2. shift fork worn.
3. worn shift cam. Thats the part the shift forks are attached to..
4. dogs on gears. easy to spot. they will be round of.
5. e-clip broken in/on counter shaft. gear sliding on shaft.Only found this 1 about a dozen times. mostly bike that were raced.
remove side cover for star wheel.
remove engine and split cases for the rest.
I live in Easton,Pa.worked on motorcycles for 37 years.

Sounds like a shifter fork. They get worn or bent from pounding the gears over the years.
Yup.
