I picked up an FP3 about a month ago (but have yet to be able to ride with it thanks to New England weather) and have poked around with it a little trying to get familiar with the software.
When I first got it, I was under the impression that it was able to, among other things, show current gear position. But after setting it up initially, I couldn't find that option. I did some casual internet searches, but had no luck. It was clear that the option was available on canbus bikes, but I never found a clear answer for pre-rushmore touring such as mine. As this was a non-critical feature for me, I didn't dig all that hard.
Fast forward to today - I had been reading some tuning advice threads, and decided to go poke around with it again. And there in front of me, was the option to show gear position. Along with instant and average fuel economy, which I also don't remember seeing before.
So my question is this: was the option always there for me and I was totally blind and missed it, or did it just get added in a recent (there have been at least 2 since I've had it) software update?
The gear indicator is available from the ecm on pre-Rushmore bikes.
I was pretty sure that was the case, since Harley makes speedos with gear indicators for those bikes. I wasn't sure if it was available to the FP3 though, since it is a 4 (or actually looks like only 3 with contacts) pin connector vs. the 6 pin I understand is on the canbus bikes. But it clearly is available to the FP3 as well since I now have it.
So we finally got some good weather, and I got to actually ride with the FP3. Pretty happy so far, but the gear position and fuel economy options disappeared on me again. I have no idea what caused then to show up a little while ago then vanish again. I wrote to V&H to inquire. This is the response:
Guess I just saw some kind of fluke? Anybody got a screenshot of gear indicator or fuel economy on an FP3 on a pre-canbus bike?
