Default Break-in question for PhilM (or anyone else)

I was reading a thread about a break-in procedure involving going from 30-60 ten times or something like that. But the search function isn't working so I can't find it now. What was that procedure if anyone remembers.

Try this... I've always ridden'em like I've stole em. Work around for the search function.

go to google and type in search"break in procedure"site:hdforums.com

You'll get quite a bit.

3rd gear, 30mph wide open up to 60mph, coast back to 30, back up to 60 repeat ten times. This is to seat the rings.

PhilM told me to - find a road where there is no traffic and get it up to third gear. Accel from 30-60 using a substantial amount of throttle and coast back down to 30 again . Do this 10 times and your rings are seated. Keep speed to a reasonable limit and vary it on the parkways with no lugging and no high RPM's.

The only thing to add is that when he says "substantial"... that means 100% throttle - WFO.
When he says "coast".... that means 0% throttle.

That's all ya gotta do. Ring seating is all that need to happen and it needs to happenbefore you ride it much, while the edges of the cylinder honing are "sharp"...

This needs to be done in the first 20 miles of riding. Put 100 miles on it and change the oil and filter. I am using HD dino oil for the first 500 then I am going to switch back to the AmsoilI used before the build

What Brad & Steve said is exactly right....

The book dos not say it, because they are trying to "break the rider in" too....

Everyone is correct for the mos part. If you are not going to use the dyno break in procedure which is what the members are talking about 30-60 manually, just vary your engine speed normally for a few hundred miles and you will also be ok.

Yup, worked for me.............no problems at all in the past 15000 miles. I just took my motor apart this weekend, and the cylinder walls still look brand new.
