Kind of a tough crowd.

OP: Go buy a lottery ticket! Now! Glad you got your money's worth out of that tire.

I'm sorry, but really, you were on a trip with a tire that was completely worn out? I generally give the bike a quick once over before I ride, and a thorough inspection before a trip which includes checking the tire depth to see if a new set of tires may be needed on the trip. This way I can call ahead to a dealer to have a new set of tires when and where I need them or replace them before I leave.

I'm in the habit of checking the tire depth when new and on every service. It gives me a pretty good idea how they're wearing and when I have to replace them. Tires are much cheaper to order them from ForteNine here in Canada than to buy them locally.

Man I’m spoiled. I don’t even like riding them after they’re flat I the center. I tolerate it for a bit, then throw a new one on. It cheap relatively speaking and they ride, and fall into curves so much nicer.

my bad. Wrong choice of words. Not traveling. I live in the boonies and closest dealer is 150 miles away. Bike threw out a code a day before and someone here said something about battery. So Was on my way to get battery tested and had my new tires on order next week anyway. Didn’t realize my tire was that bad. So thought May be I could go and come back and then change tire next week. Frankly I think I just wanted to ride. Made a mistake, second mistake was not knowing about tire wear. I knew it was bald just didn’t know how bad. Not good on my part.

I’m curious how often you check your tire pressure? That’s a normal time to check tire tread.

I used to get 14k out of my Vulcan 750 rear tire. So I was surprised when my rear skidded in the rain, at 6k miles. It’s a little hard to see the tread under the saddlebags and rear fender, but your tires are your only contact with Mother Earth. I used to check my tire pressure every tank of gas, now I do it about every two weeks or two tanks of gas.

You should check around and find a better Indy.

When you get a new one, you might want to buy an extra one.. I'm glad you're still with us..

Don't mean to be too tough on you, schiit happens. I also live in a remote area when it comes to getting motorcycle parts. But a good maintenance routine will help identify parts and supplies before you need them. Probably something that rubbed off on me after almost 40 years of operating heavy railway equipment with proprietary parts that can cause major down time if you don't have the right thing on hand.

In my opinion this is also a reason why insurance costs are very high in my area. I see a few bikes around that shouldn't be on the road here that are an accident waiting to happen..

Any mishap on a bike that you walk away in one piece is a cheap lesson! From the bikes in your signature, looks like you’ve been riding for several years. Its surprising you didn’t learn about tire wear on a bike!
