Default Fuel line disconnect; Need help PLEASE

Long story short, I need to drain my fuel tank, and I’m having trouble getting my fuel line disconnected from the fuel rail…my plan is to connect the other end of the line to the tank and drain it into a gas can. The manual says, 1ush fuel line towards fuel rail
2: pull and hold retainer sleeve
3:remove fuel line
Sounds simple enough, but I can’t get the damn thing off. If I’m reading this right, it sounds like I need to pull the retainer sleeve towards the primary side of the bike…is this correct? I want to make sure before I get a little more aggressive, it won’t take much to break this plastic crap. Any tricks ? I know it sounds easy, but like I said I don’t want to break it, and wind up having to wait for a new fitting and/or fuel line for a week. Thanks

BTW: I googled and searched the forum, all I could find was how to disconnect the fuel line from the tank, and tank removal. Didn’t see anything about disconnecting from the fuel rail.

I know when I removed the tank on my ‘20 Heritage, I had to do the purge first by disconnecting the fuel pump connector and try starting the bike a couple of times to remove the pressure.

Looks like there may be a couple of little buttons on the side, perhaps push, depress buttons and pull gently?

The manual shows it as one piece, with the sleeve…

I’ll see is there’s a way to get to those little tabs. Thanks.
And I did purge the line per the service manual

I would recomend siphoning the tank rather than using the pump to run like that.

I think your steps are for the quick connect at the tank. You lift the sleeve, pull the hose out and then pull the sleeve back down so the gas dont leak. I drained mine from the cross tube last time. If you disconnect the other end theres nothing stopping the gas going everywhere. Get a cheap siphon pump and get as much as you can out of it first or your gonna have a gas on everything

To relieve the pressure, open the gas cap, TAKE OUT the fuel pump fuse, then start it and let it stall. Then you can squeeze them tabs and remove it. Now I have a used fuel line I picked up cheap and cut the end off to add more hose to quick connect and reach a gas can. No more mess for me. Also added a quick release to my cross tube that doesnt leak when disconnected. Done the gas mess before and dont want to do it again

Thanks for the help…I decided to just leave that fuel line alone and used my siphoning pump and got most of the gas out.
I did relieve the pressure from the system prior to doing all this, I have a service manual and followed its procedure
