Default Test Ride

Finished up my scoot today. I left it stock bore 88" and added Andrews 26G and S&S Gear drive, Mikuni HSR42 with Mileage Kit. I already had the SE A/C and SE Pro 1 Slip Ons.

Gear drive is pretty quiet, slight, hardly noticable whine at idle. I did however have some pretty decent readings on my gear set up so I was lucky.

I hadn't been able to go tune it in yet but I did take it for a few miles to warm it up and adjust the idle and air screw. 2 more weeks before I get off my crutches and I can go dial it in.

Seat of the pants, it had lots more low end get up and go. About 5 mph and I cranked the throttle and the rear tire broke loose and walked the *** over pretty good. Pretty good acceleration to around 5600 or so then it evens out some.

Big improvement !!

Ah ha. A set up I was looking for. I have a carb, and most here do not. LOL What did all the parts cost you? Can you give me part numbers? And did you do the install, or have it done? Tell me anything you think you would have done differently, if anything. I have a '05 rk custom, with a carb. I added a se a/c, a k & n element, had the carb drilled and jetted, and have drag pipes. Thanks. I hope once you get up and running (or walking. LOL) you can give me a full review.

Yea, I was starting to feel like a black sheep myself. I purposely selected a carb model so I didn't have to spend big bucks on tuning. Now days, from looking at the threads, tuning and mapping seems to be no problem with the injection. Injections has great benefits, but in the beginning you were held hostage by the dealers when it came to mods. My carb model, I can make a few runs, read the plugs and drop in a new jet.

I haven't fine tuned it yet, and honestly see no sense in a dyno run.I honestly do not care what the numbers are as long as it does what *I* want. Initial Results, I can say that it is aBig improvement over what I had before. Much better idle and off idle response and awesome Low and Midrange Torque. No highway miles or long rides logged yet because of the crutches.

My project started for several reasons.
1) Drivability was decent but the damn spitting thru the carb off idle was driving me nuts. It wasn't all the time but enough to **** me off. Richening the Idle Mixture circuit enough to get rid of it resulted in poor mileage & Yes, I couldhave fixed it, but I Like flat slide carbs!! and someone else butchered this carb before I got it. SE Pro 1 pipes probably weren't the best choice. PO Installed them and I kept them.

2) I had some pits showing up on some of my covers and wanted to fix that before it got out of hand. No better time to do that while the exhaust and engine covers were off. Had my old factory covers chromed and polished and used them.

3) Broke my foot, had surgery (pins & stuff) and had to be one legged for 8 weeks. Being bored to death and can't ride, I figured I would put the bike on the lift and play with it some.

I bought the Cams, Gears, Bearings, Gasket, Boltsand everything as a complete kit with the cam selection I wanted. $585 (americanclassicmotors on ebay). I emailed them for the set up I wanted. You may shop around or use a forum vendor if they have something to offer?

I bought the Mikuni HSR42 Easy Kit PN# 42-18 for $245and free shipping from the folks above as well.

Since I went with the Bolt In Andrews 26G Cams I was able to re-use my stock pushrods. This required Top Rocker Box gaskets, Lifter Block Gaskets, and Push Tube O-Rings. Around $20 bucks or so.

Yes, did it myself. It was pretty easy. Now, if you do not have the tools or know someone with them it will make it hard to do yourself.

Tools:
Torque Wrench - Inch Pounds that will do around 100 in.Lbs. You will use 90 to 100"lbs a lot.
Torque Wrench - 3/8" drive to handle 20 to 35 Ft. Lbs.
Dial Indicator to check backlash
Bearing puller and installer for Inner cam bearings - Details below.
Tensioner Tool - To release tensioner pressure (Made mine)
Hyd. Press. - To press bearings and Gears.

The only tools I needed was the inner bearing puller. All my collets were too large. I could have rented the toolsbut I decided to buy a simple setup from Gary. Nice little installer and remover for $86.
See here for the source https://www.hdforums.com/m_1744326/tm.htmIt worked very good without a hitch.

You can buy tools also from Georges Garage here on the forum as well. George's is where my oil pump alignment pins came from. Quality tools for sure. http://www.georges-garage.com/

Numerous places on the Net rent tools as well.

I had no problems at all removing or installing any of the bearings or cams in the cam support plate. I used the Thermal Delta method which worked perfect. Everything dropped in by hand.

Assembly is straight forward and easy. A couple of items you want to be sure to do and it requires a dia
