Default Ok, so I'd like to know

about your 07 FLHR Road Kings. I am veeerrry close (again) to trading my 06 Super GLide Custom on an 07 RK. I've looked around the forum, and the heat, and tranny (5th gear) seem to have been the leading discussions. Are those topics widespread, or pretty scattered. I guess meaning does the majority feel that way??

So, how do you like your RK, and any suggestions?

Thanks

I have an 07 Road King. To be honest I had heat issues and tranny whine. I road the bike for 1000 miles and then swicthed to all synthetic oils and installed Vance and Hines Big Shot Duals, a Big Sucker A/C and V&H Fuel Pack. All problems went away. I had planned to do these modifications before I even bought the bike so I don't consider it a big deal.

The heat did bother me mostly when sitting in traffic in 100 degree weather. It probably would have been uncomfortable on an 06 or earlier. The 5th gear whine did not bother me at all.

All in all I love the RK. I did buy a Dead Center Cycles fairing but still love the ability to take it off for the striped down RK look.

Glebo,

I had an 06 softail and moved up to the 07 RK Classic. The new ride is much hotter especially on warmer days. I put the heat shields on butI don't think they help much. I had the IDS installed and feel it was well worth the money. I put on 07 screaming eagle mufflers that had baffle upgrades, so it sounds good. I put a Kenny Day fairing on the bike which seems to get alot of attention at the rallies. It's a black bike with just the right amount of extra chrome to make it really stand out. I put the slimline whitewalls on it, which even made it look better. The owner of the local dealership was walking by the other day and stopped and said that he thought it was one of the best looking bikes hehas seen lateley, and he see's alot of motorcycles and not much for conversation. I think any bike that you have or buy, you will want to make some changes just to suit your individual preferences.

Glebo,
I have heard about the tranny whine and the heat. I had the dealer install Rinehart TD's, PCIII and SE A/C before I took delivery of my 07 Road King Classic. I can hear the 5th gear whine, but it's no big deal and DEFINITELY not loud enough to be annoying. The Rinehart's must've taken care of the heat because It's not bad at all.

I started out on a Dyna as well, and the RKC is a Cadillac compared to my Street Bob. I love my Road King. The only thing left to decide is whether you want Cruise Control (RK Classic), or not (RK Standard).

Good Luck!

My 07 RK Classic is bone stock. I can hear the whine in 5th, but it's not bothersome... If I lose track of which gear I'm in the whine always lets me know. Heat is only an issue in hot weather siting in traffic or moving very slow... It only got hot to the point of being actually painful one time and that was sitting in a backup on I95. If I hadn't been so close to an exit and kept running so I could escape to the ramp, I would not have gotten that hot.

I'll have had it a year on 24 Oct and have 14,500 on it, so it's been ridden.

Asmodeus,
I know what your talking about. That is exactly where I suffered the full effects of the bikes heat also. I95 South or North from DC is allot of fun!

I came from an '03 Dyna Low Rider to an '07 Road King Classic and absolutely love the new bike. It's true, it does get hot while waiting in a jam (compared to my old '88 twin cam) - that's no big deal now as I switch it off and wait!.... The tranny whine is just character and certainly not intrusive. Installing the IDS upgrade gets good reviews from this forum, and I will do it when good offers reach the UK.
Go for it - the new smooth ride will win you over.

I have an 05 Road King Custom. I put RJs shields on and NO MORE heat issues. As far as the bike it is a five speed so I do not have any tranny problems either. I love this bike and the versatility it offers. Goes from RK "ultra" to RK Street Cruiser in 10 minutes

glebo, go ahead and trade. the whine is almost non-exsistant after switching to a good synth. oil. ( moble1, amsoil ), true duels and a fuel controller will tame the heat. Heck, don't really need to even do the ehaust as I have heard that just adding a fuel controller cools them down real good. Not like a wing, but this is an air cooled motor after all.
Hope this helps.
On a side note, I had an '85 vf700s honda that was water cooled, sitting in traffic on a summer day and the fan kicking on would cook you real quick.
