Defective IDS "Bowel"
I just opened the sealed box with the IDS bowel, Harley part number 40560-05, and the casting is horribly defective. There are cracks in the outer rim and obvious defects in the entire casting. Given the torque this part is subject to, I got to believe that if it were installed it would grenade and cause a catastrophic failure. Maybe Harley has turned up IDS production volume at the expense of quality control.

To me.. it looks more like a "lap"... what we refered to on aricraft part.. where the casting mold seem would have been but while fresh out of the cast the seam was burnished down causing a crooked look lap that could be mistaken for a crack//
Best to take it back to where you got it and let them have it verified... Look at another one to compare.. and if they exchange it out for you ask them to make sure they mark this as bad so no body else won't get it..

Note that on half the smooth side of the bowel there are "ripples" that are raised about an eighth of an inch. On the inside of the bowel the two "bumps" on the edge go all the way through the casting to the other side. On the non-rippled side, there does not appear to be any "cracking." The "cracking" only occurs on the "rippled" side to the bowel. The camera's flash washed out a considerable casting defect above the "crack." Now I'm not a casting expert, but this doesn't look right to me. Do you think, despite its appearance, it's safe to use?

Dennis,
If you feel uncomfortable about putting that on your bike, I wouldn't do it. I mean, I probably would (again I don't have my hands on it, I'm just looking at a picture)
Regardless, I'd get a second opinion first. Take it up to your local HD, have them pull the part and compare the two.
Hopefully they have one in stock to look at.
Good luck!

It's obviously a die-cast part and it's got to be at least a three-part "mold". I think in the first photo you're seeing the result of imperfect alignment of two die parts during that shot and it wouldn't be a cause of concern for me. The second and third photos don't look particularly alarming either, and I looked closely. If it were me I'd use it, but like lp said, I'm not holding the part in my hand getting ready to bolt it up to my bike.
I highly doubt that part made it past QC without getting kicked out if it weren't solid throughout. In this day and age it's not just visual inspection, but usually the parts are subjected to sonic imaging (or some such) by automated equipment to check for density irregularities.
Must be like getting a "tranny" that "clatters", h'uh? "Don't worry, it's normal." Hahaha!
Seriously, though, the good advice was to take it to a dealer and see if you can compare parts side-by-side and get their opinion on it if you're at all concerned.
