Default Mounting a Garmin Nuvi

Based on this thread https://www.hdforums.com/m_2529028/tm.htmI decided to try my Nuvi on my 08 SG. I know no one asked, but my issue was figuring out how I wanted it mounted. So I ordered 2 mounts and will try both. For the benefit of anyone who actually cares here is the first attempt. I am not sure I like it, but for those who might here is the parts list from Ram Mounts.

RAM-HOL-GA23 - Nuvi 660 Holder
RAM-B-238 - Base with ball
RAM-B-201-A - Short Socket Arm
RAM-B-309-1 - RAM Cycle Handle Bar base with 1 Ball

This is what the installed GPS looks like. It is a little up in my face for my taste. It would certainly work. However, I would like to have it fit further into the fairing. I have another method of mounting the GPS on the way, and I will post pics of that when I get it on.

I posted on the other thread too. My first impression is dang that thing is huge! I got the 3.5 inch screen for that exact reason. Good Luck. I was also thinking about trying the short socket arm on mine as well. With the standard socket arm the thing has to fold quite a bit to get it where I wanted it.

The Nuvi has the ball mount in the back right?

Where did you get the power from? Was it difficult routing power cables? When you take the GPS off when not in use does the power cable have a quick disconnect?

I have a Zumo 550 I plan on putting on in the near future.

On my setup which you can see by clicking here, I just use the cigarette lighter for power. The mount for my unit has a quick power disconnect cable which goes into the side of the cradle. If I did not have a cigarette lighter (no fairing) I would have taken power from a switched circuit somewhere else. I would also make sure that I had an in line fuse.

My setup is plug and play. I can run on battery for over 4 hours and if I need power to charge or run the unit I just plug the cable in. No big deal.

I ordered the mounting kit from RAM-Mount also.....for my nuvi 350. I have been using it
with the suction mount on the fuel tank lid, with no problems. Except when it comes time
to refuel. So thought I'd try something else...hence RAM.....

Will post some pics when it arrives.....

I don't plan on having power while riding. I have seen other posts indicating they use the cig lighter for power. Maybe they changed something in 08 because with the bars turn hard left I have about 1/2 inch from the lighter to the front of the fuel tank. My Nuvi has an FM receiver in the cig plug that receives traffic data. This means the plug is very long and would never fit. It can run on battery power for some time and I figure I can charge it when I stop and rest my rear. I only want to use it to find my way home after I get lost on some off the moutain rides in this area.

Maybe you could run an additional cigarette plug inside of the fairing just for the traffic receiver. Maybe wire it in parallel to the main plug and then water proof it with some shrink tubing and electrical tape. You could then run the wire to your GPS from inside of the fairing to the ram mount. I have heard that some Garmin units such as the Street Pilot 550 have the weather receiver built into the actual unit but I am not sure.

I have used the normal charger for my Garmin plugged into the cigarette lighter plug with no problems riding whatsoever. I doubt that you would ever really have to go that hard left while riding. I have on 02 EG so I am not sure if the plug placement is different. Maybe some of the GPS gurus can chime in on here.
