Default Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On

While patiently waiting at a red light, two other earlier model Ultra Classics pulled up beside me. After acknowledging one another, one rider commented on how much my mirrors vibrated.

Well, I thought the vibrations were pretty normal but did notice their's really weren’t moving at all.

My question…how much vibration is “normal” and when is it excessive? I do experience vibration to the point the mirrors are useless at idle and still quite blurry during most all cruising speeds.

I have an ‘08 UC with just 700 miles on it…all stock. I’ve read several posts about motor mounts and to check them. I’m expecting my service manual next week so I’ll wait for it before I begin taking things apart.

Your comments/suggestions will be appreciated.

Pull your outer fairing off and check the supports going from the inner fairing supports to the speaker mount. These brackets are small but when the hardware is loose or when a fairing support cracks the fairing will shake or vibrate like you describe.
This may not be your issue but it is very possible, worth checking.
Joe.

My 08 vibrates a lot more than the 04 did. I don't think that you have to worry about replacing the motor mount already on an 08 unless it was defective. You could try the Buell motor mount and see if that helps. Here is the LINK that talks about using the Buell mount as opposed to the HD one. Also gives the part number.

You should be able to see out of the mirrors on a stock Harley, i'd take it back to the dealer and have them check it out.

Sitting at a idle, most of the rubbermounts tend to shake a bit. With my beach bars in stiffer poly bushings, my mirrors bouce around quite a bit. Don't worry about it.

Thanks for the link...I read that before. The lower front on the '08 is the "new style" mount as pictured in that post.

I did look at mine and it seems to be compressed and slightly deformed on one side. Not knowing what the torque value is, I'm not sure if that's "normal" or not.

I'll let the dealer take a look at it sometime in the near future...

Thanks - I'll give that a check. Rain, sleet, snow, and ice forecasted here in "Hot-lanta" tomorrow...sounds like a good time to look behind the fairing.

Just had two of my fairing brackets replaced yesterday: https://www.hdforums.com/m_2737613/m...tm.htm#2737613
