Default Big Bore upgrade advice

OK guys here's the deal;
-Cylinders
bore your own $180 (I have to go back and ask what exactly this is)
-Pistons:
22868-00 9.6.1 high compresion forged $279.95
-Cyl. heads work $1162.50
-32076-04 compression releases $84.95
-gaskets
head SE metal $26.95
engine kit $87.90
-Cams
SE 211 $269.95
service kit $64.00
spacer kit $10.00
Adjustable push rods $139.95
-Dyno $350
-Labor $900 Total $3,556.15 + tax

I already have pipes, intake and PC III. I know this is high, but the dealer will do it and I get to maintain warranty. The guys that do the head work have a very good reputation. So how bad I'm I getting scre...d here? The cheaper option is the typical 88 to 95 big bore kit for $1,550. This is similar but with better results. What ya think...? Thanks Rob

ATC2, I doubt that the MOCO is going to cover your build under the factory warranty--perhaps what you are hearing is your dealer saying that he will warranty the build; but that's not going to help if you break down or have a problem out of town.

If there is no MOCO warranty, are you still interested in this build?

you don't need compression releases for 9.6:1. Boreing the cylindeers is because the pistons you are buying are bigger than stock, therefore, the bore must be made larger. Hence "big bore." For such a mild build, I'd just do a street port and polish for head work. Try bigboyzcycles.com they do this for $300. Also, a big bore and cam swap isn't that difficult. Plenty of people on here have done it and are more than willing to answer your questions. Some will even loan you tools if you ask them. PhilM is one of them, and he's in Texas. He's a great source of info and has done some detailed write ups on here that you can search for. And, look for parts at Chicago Harely or one of the other discount sites. All these things will bring your cost down to around $1000.

You guys are correct, I got a word of mouth that the warranty would be honored, I would need it in writing before comiting to anything.
I knowI can get this done for less,
I was wondering if the tradeoff of getting it done through the dealer and if the warranty thing works outwould be worth the extra money.
I have an extended warranty on the bike so I'm trying not to void that since it's money already spent. And if this ugrade is worth the expense compaired to the stansdard 88 to 95, that one is only $1,550. The sales pitch of corse is that it's worth it. But I trust you guys more than the "stealer", $3550 is a lot of cash in my book. Not sure what to do here...

Thanks Greydog, I'll make sure to ask them why compression releases if I don't need them. I bet I'll get the usual " yes you do need that"

Seems like an awful lot of money for that build. I don't think you need a $1000.00 worth of head work to make that cam worka mild street port job would suffice. I'd proably look at the andrews 37 cams or the R&R 525 cam you'd probably be happier. You don't need the comp releases. If your really that concerned with keeping the warranty I'd leave it alone til it's out of warranty.

Just FYI if you aren't too concerned with keeping the extended warranty the MOCO will give you a prorated refund on the balance.

The heads are overpriced and likely because the dealer is marking them up. My advice to you if you want performance is check the guys in the area that port and polish heads and check the direct price. If you're going to add pistons, bore & hone cylinders accordingly, up the compressionto 10.5:1 with the reliefs, add some better cams (211 cams are weak) have the springs and valves done, and away you go. Have a reputable indy shop do the work, and say screw the dealer. If properly built, you should have no issues. Warranties to me are for worry warts. Build the engine the way you like it, drive it the way you like to, and leave the warranty for other items that are not drive train related. Just my opinion, but that's the way to go if you want performance.

No dealer is ever going to warranty a motor with independent head work donewhen it has bored cyls, cams, pipes, and a fuel module. Especially outside of your local dealers shop or area. I doubt that local dealer would even put the warranty in writing and would almost bet that is the case. Go try and you will see.Never bend over for the dealer when there are many indpendents out there with great reputations. Ask for referals here in the forums and you can find local or regional builderswith great feedback, and excellent econo builds.

I'd find a reputable (look, ask, listen) independent, order your own parts based on compatible components, and get a refund on your factory extended warranty. The work you listed would be $1000.00 less if I were having it done, not that I'd want those parts, but if I did...
