Default 21" front wheel and a front end lowering kit

okay.... done the search. But I still have a few questions:

1. will this wheel work on my 2000 EGC?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-C...3756.m20.l1116

2. do you guys recommend the HD front lowering kit or i found this one -- didnt know if you had an opinion:
http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id131.html

3. can a novice wrench do these mods (especially the lowering of the front)? And would i need the service manual to do this?

4. i have seen the question asked but not really answered -- i was planning on keeping the stock rear 16" wheel -- although i am lowering it 1.25" -- any opinions this? I know a lot go with the 18" rear, but it would seem that would make the bike taller again, and although i am not short (6' 1") i am almost all torso. Bummer. Anyway, i cant see upgrading the rear wheel when it is never seen anyway. Thoughts?

Thanks again and this forum rocks!!!!

1. That wheel should work. Only reason I say should is they aren't supplying any shims to set the bearing pre-load. May not be necessary. Hopefully someone can chime in on that.

2. I wouldn't go with the e-glide goodies kit. It does not look like it includes heavier front springs. I personally like Progressive Suspension kits. They are under $100.

3. Yes, but you need the service manual. Should be the first accessory you buy in my opinion

4. No problem leaving the rear stock. The 21" will raise the front a little over 1", so lowering the back 1.25" may cause some handling problems. If you're going to lower the rear 1.25", I recommend loweing the front 1.5" - 2". The progressive kit will allow this.

5. Don't forget you will need to check your front fender for adequate clearance when installing the 21" up front. You need at least 1/4". You will probably have to hog out the rear fender mounting bolts.

The above is only my opinion, I'm sure others will chime in.

okay i called the people that sell the wheel, they said it is not a bolt-on fit, that i would probably need to use spacers to get a correct fit. Does anyone know what I would need there? or if there is another place I should look to buy a laced front wheel that will bolt right on without too much of a problem?

Thanks!

I would check with any of the following for a truly bolt on wheel:

Hogpro
Ride Wright Wheels
DNA Wheels
Wheel Works
Black Bike Wheels

okay thanks -- after going onto all those sits, i found that Black Bike had what i wanted. Which was laced (billet is not my bag). This is what they quoted me:

21" x 3" up front, chrome, 60 twisted spokes
Avon white wall tire
Chrome Rotors
about 7 days for delivery
about $1000

I did ask him why the 3 and not 3.5 on the width, and he told me that the white wall doesnt look good on the 3.5 -- that with the 3", you can go either black or white wall. He said its what they recommend.

What size tire are they selling you?

Most guys running 21's are using the 120/70/21 on 3.5 rim up front. It's what I'm using. I don't know of a tire manufacturer making a white wall in the 120 size. They are probably selling you a 90/21. I see a couple of problems with that size on a bagger.
1) Load rating is pretty low
2) The rim size for that tire is between 1.85" to 2.5", with 1.85" being ideal
3) They look pretty skinny in the dig touring fender, but that's a personal preference.

Personally I think that size is too small for a bagger because of points 1 and 2 above. That's just my opinion though.

If you want to go with that tire, I would suggest a rim width within the recommended sizes above.

Here is the source of my info. Avon Tire Spec

Most guys are running the 120/70/21 on a 3.25 or 3.5 rim up front. I don't know of a tire manufacturer making a white wall in the 120 size. They are probably selling you a 90/21 or 100/21. Personally I think that size is too small for a bagger. That's just my opinion though.
i dont know what size it is. he said 3" was the stock width. He asked me what i wanted to go with -- black or white wall. I said white -- however i dont care all that much. The back tire is black, and maybe that makes the most sense since cleaning the back white wall would be a bitch! LOL. I can go with 3.5 -- he has it, but just made a suggestion. I saw most people tend to go with the 3.5, so maybe i will just get that in the black wall. Do you have a tire preference? I use avons on my other bike.

I edited my post above with more info.

If you don't have to have a white wall, I would definitely go with a 120/70/21 on a 21x3.5 rim. I personally prefer Metzler ME880's. I think they handle better than the Avon Venoms. I had both on my previous RKC. I've been told that the Metz don't grow at speed as much as the Avon's, but I have nothing to back that up. Whatever you do, please check your fender clearance after you get the new wheel mounted up and space it accordingly. Many burnt paint job stories from people who didn't...... self included.

Thanks, Zach -- your info has been VERY helpful. Kudos to you.

I will order the 21 x 3.5 with twisted spokes, black avon, new rotors. Yay! My bike is gonna be SICK in a few weeks

Should I just order the progressive kit through harley when i order the service manual?

EDIT: errr, i mean Metzler ME880
