Default cam position sensor

hey gang,
Got a 2000 rk,my engine light came on checked the diagnostic code 42 says its the camshaft positioner sensor. What i'm wondering is, is that magnetic like the speedo? I had tohave thecambearings, tensioners replacedlast summer(cam bearings raise hell when the go, by the way!) maybe it could have some trash or something like the speedo sensors do? Also noticed it is not in the wiring harness that it is supposed to be in, I think it may have been replaced before I bought the bike.Anybody ever replaced one? Also when I take the derby cover off I should'nt lose a bunch of oil should I?

Thanks in advance.

Is the light staying on? If not, it is a historic code that will clear itself after 50 starts. These codes are sometimes caused when the bike kicks back when you are trying to start it. If the light is on, then the sensor is bad. You do not take the derby cover off to replace it. You take the cam cover off. You will only lose a few ounces of oil.

the light comes on,i wait for the fuel pump to stop then fire it up. now sometimes it will come on and stay and other times it will go out.on occasion it acts like it dosn't want to start on the first time,it turns over and no go,then i'll wait a sec or two then it will fire up.
is the sensor a hard item to replace? i'm mechanically inclined, didn't know if there was speacial tools involved.
thanks
