Default How to adjust chain Tensioner on '02 EG

Looking for some help in adjusting the chain tensioner on my '02 EG. Did a oil charge in all 3 hole with Mobil V1 205-50 Synand getting a whine for the primary.Suggested it could be the tensioner. My HD manual sucks. It doesn't tell you how to do it. No diagram or pics. It tells you the amount of free play but not where to measure from. I'm thinking the measurement is taken on the chain above the tensioner not asthe chain goes over the plastic shoe.Looking for may a web site with diagrams or from someone who knows.
Thanks

I bought me one of THESE to check the deflection when I had my 04. Anywho, after you determine which way you need to go with the adjuster, here's what you do....to measure you use the edge of the inspection hole opening and say you use the tool I linked above, you would line the 1/8" mark equal to the edge as shown in the pic of the link and push upward. It should fall in the specified range depending on whether it is hot or cold. If not, loosen the top nut on the adjuster a total of two turns. You can see it in the pic I posted below and then move the adjuster up or down depending on where you need to be. When you're where you need to be, tighten nut 21-29 ft pounds (here's where I choose middle=25 ft pounds) and there you have it.

Dawg
Always appreciate your help. As I don 't have the tool right now, could I just push up with my finger on the chain and see how much it goes up. If it goes up slighty less than a 1" that would be okay.

Apparently you don't have the HD manufactured service manual.
Because both of mine do tell you how, and how much (tight)
and have pictures.
You can do it through the rectangular inspection hole but it is a pain.
Easiest is to buy the auto tensioner, remove the outer cover and put it
in let it adjust automatically.

Take that little cover off on the left side. Take out the spark plugs so you can turn the engine with the back wheel. You'll have to turn it a good bit trying to figure out which is the tightest spot in the chain while it's on top. I'm pretty sure it should it should be 1/2 to 5/8 cold and 3/8 to 1/2 hot, If it's anywhere near an inch right now, when you get it adjust you'll notice a big difference in your bike.

rfp, from the HDForums home page scroll down to where you will find tech tips.
There is a great posting with pictures that Mother HD neglected to print for you (cost saving measure me thinks) One of the members posted some easy to follow details and what a easy to make tool looks like that will give you an idea how to do this easy task.
Hope this info goes along with everything else the others have suggested.
Rob
