Camping
I retire next week and plan to see America starting early June. Being retired and not having as much money coming in I will have to camp. Any thoughts on where to find a list of campsites, especially in the west. New Mexico, California, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Montana etc
I've never stayed here, but I hear it is very nice, with great hosts. It's on a very scenic highway that links Crescent City, CA (Redwood country) to Grants Pass, OR.

Lots of nice camping along Hwy 101 on the Oregon Coast as well.
Congrats on retirement, have a great tour this summer.

Try this site: http://www.stateparks.com/
It has a great list, by state, of the state parks.
Wishing I was planning such a trip.

This is a site for the Delorme Gazeteer Atlases. They will show almost every campsite & backroad in most if not all states.
You can always get a free peek at some in bookstores like Barnes & Noble. One of the best investments you can ever make for that kind of travel.
Montana has a lot of free camping, including at the base of the Beartooth Pass along Rock Creek (bring your fishing gear for some free food.
Ride safe & enjoy your time off. My turn is coming soon.

Theakerr,
Check out the web sites for each state that you plan to visit. To get you started, here is the one for Montana: http://www.visitmt.com/tripplanner/c...lodge/camp.htm
This next site caters to RVers, but it is a good site to learn about both public and private campgrounds. They sell a two inch thick book that lists most campgrounds in the US and Canada. Just a good resource if you are into planning every night's stay. http://www.tldirectory.com/index.cfm
When all else fails, get a free state map for each state. They all show National Forest and State Campgrounds.

You will find that in a lot of small towns in the west and midwest, they have free camping in their city parks. Their thinking being that if you stay a night, you will shop or eat there.
