Default RE: Oil Question

You can put syn in whenever you want and I would recommend it sooner rather then later. Yes some say that there is less friction with syn but isn't that what oil is supposed to do. Syn oil is designed to take the heat of our air cooled engine a little better. Just make sure you get a good CF (rating for diesel engine) rated oil. Valvoline Mobil 1 are my preferance.

08's come from the factory with dino oil. As others have said I would change oil and filter now, then switch to syn when you get back. You can switch to synthetic right now if you want, but why spend the extra cash if you are going to be changing again in a few hundred miles?

All mfg's will advise to put about 5k on before switching to syn oil, reason being that the rings wont seat with syn because it has less friction compounds. Anyone who is in the trade will advise the same thing.
Total BS! The vast majority of breaking in takes place in the first 50-100 miles. I've never read anywhere that you must wait 5,000 miles! Synthetics are so superior in every way I can't see why everyone doesn't use them - but this has been the subject of over a million threads!!

I would change it now with regular oil and do the synthetic when you get back. simple enough.

Put clean dino back in for a while longer. Don't confuse HDsyn with something like Amsoil. Saying that some come from the factory with syn but it's a group 3 which has dino in it. It really should be looked at as a semi synthetic and it won't hurt breakin much. I would not recommend any group 4 synthetics until it has had a good breakin. A good additive package in the oil at this point is not your friend. Later , yes.
