My buddy drilled a hole in the collar and installed a grease fitting. About 10 minutes and 15 cents for the fitting.

I already have a chrome inner primary or I would have done that.
Got the idea from Dawg.

Best and cheapest idea. Earlier bikes came with a grease fitting already there. My 2000 has one.

The reason I was told that there is no longer a grease fitting in there is the grease traps dirt in there and that is worse than no grease. I don't know if that is right just relaying a message.

I'd say the real reason is because HD can save 50 cents on production of a new bike and then, they can sell you a new cover when your old one is wallowed out from the lack of grease on the shaft.

Actually I "think" the newer bikes have a teflon bushing in them that do not require as much lube as the older ones that had metal bushings. Eitherway you can bet it was/is a cost saving "refinement".
